Time to Celebrate Men’s History Month

Don’t you think it’s about time this great country of ours galvanizes around the idea that every year we dedicate a month to honor and respect men? And don’t you think we should call it Men’s History Month and promote it on Instagram and Twitter?

This would have a similar look and feel to all the other months we dedicate to many other groups throughout the year. It would be a sign and demonstration of solidarity with the widely spreading equity and inclusion movement.

During that month men would be interviewed on podcasts sharing insights on what it’s like to be a man, what men care about, what keeps men up at night, what men think about when they’re alone, what men would like to see happen with this country, what men believe needs to change, what men believe they contribute to society, how men see themselves as part of the large social movements, whether men wish for something they can’t have nor articulate, what men yearn for most.

Men would be asked what they think. They would be brought into the larger societal discussions, part of the collective conversation. Men could also be profiled by major media outlets about their lies, what they do at work, how they contribute, how they acquiesce and defer and misstep and blunder, what they believe being a man means, what men’s frailties are, and what they bring to the table, if anything, that’s differentiating.

On each day of Men’s History Month, Sammy Sportface would interview a man and write a blog about it. The schedule would lead with Sportface interviewing his boyhood friend Rudy to find out why Rudy acted the way he did towards Sportface and what lessons, if any, he learned from that that he applies in his life today. Rudy would be given the Sportface platform to tell his side of history unfiltered through the lens of how Sportface sees it.

On the second day of the month, Naves would be the featured man and he would share how he came to meet Sportface in college, how that experience changed how he perceived the world, and how that new perspective has changed his values and how he goes about each day. He’ll reshape history into a story that he believes is accurate and unbiased, and go on a soliloquy about the novelty of the idea of a Men’s History Month but that he believes could be an idea whose time has passed.

On the third day, the man to be honored will be Idea Man, the man Sportface turns to each day to discuss what blog needs to be written – and don’t and shouldn’t . Idea Man will take us back to his college days just getting to know who Sportface was and at first being wary to get involved but ultimately figuring out he and Sportface had an ideation chemistry that he knew was undeniable and would help change how people understand sports, manhood, and Bill Walton.

This pattern would continue for each day of the month and the entire nation would be pulled, albeit in some cases begrudgingly, into the movement. There would be street fairs where men would walk around with posters saying “Men are People Too” “Much Ado About Men” and “Demystifying Men.” There would be men riding unicycles and strutting on pogo sticks and some with faces painted with the M on one cheek, the E on the nose, and another M on the other cheekbone. There would be men-dominated rock bands, men horoscopists, men banjo players, men throwing pies at other men’s faces, men doing cross-over dribbles and step-back threes, men playing the piano and break dancing, and men downing plenty of food men like such as steaks with A1 Sauce, greasy fries, coffee rolls, and Twizzlers.

On the last day of the month, Sportface would give a speech to all men across America on a Zoom call urging them to step out of their comfort zones and be better men, contribute more to society, and be their most productive beings, to be good citizens, to embrace diversity in all its permutations. He’ll mention a few things about the Wake Forest basketball collapse, the Joker being the greatest passer the basketball world has ever seen, and the need for all men to stand up for all men everywhere for the rest of their lies no matter the blowback, no matter the career and personal repercussions, and regardless of who says it’s a bad idea.
