River Hawks Fall 10-1 in Series Finale

MANHATTAN, KS – The UMass Lowell River Hawks baseball team (3-7) dropped the series finale against the Kansas State Wildcats (7-3) 10-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Junior Brandon Fish (Londonderry, N.H.) had one hit and one RBI to go with the lone run for the River Hawks. Senior Trey Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) went 2-2 while fellow senior Roddy Hernandez (Jersey City, N.J.) and junior Conor Kelly (Hopkinton, Mass.) each tallied a hit.

Freshman James Capellupo (Hilton, N.Y.) falls to 1-1 on the season in 4.2 inning game with one strikeout. Sophomore Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.) went 1.0 inning and struck out two. Seniors Zach Fortuna (Newburyport, Mass.) and Andres Hulfachor (Nashua, N.H.) each struck out one.

The offense struggled to get going in the first two innings while Capellupo threw a scoreless first. The freshman was in a jam with runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the second. Capellupo struck out the batter to end the frame and keep the Wildcats off the board. UMass Lowell’s defense turned up with a nice 6-4-3 double play in the third before a pop up ended the frame.

Conor Kelly and Trey brown combined for two hits in the fifth to put runners on the corners with two outs. Roddy Hernandez drew a walk to load the bases, but all three runners were left stranded. Kansas State took the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a fielder’s choice. Back-to-back hits with two outs scored two to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.

Andres Hulfachor came in for Capellupo in the fifth. Kansas State tacked on one more run to take a 4-0 lead into the sixth. Brandon Fish’s leadoff solo shot in the seventh got the River Hawks on the board. The Wildcats answered with three runs in the bottom half to push the lead to seven runs.

Kansas State scored two in the eighth inning and took game three of the series 10-1. The River Hawks go 0-3 on the weekend and fall to 3-7 on the year. Next up, UMass Lowell visits Creighton for two games on March 5 and 6 at the Charles Swchab Field in Omaha.
