The Boston Red Sox are building momentum at an important point in August. Boston just finished home series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants. The Red Sox won both series at Fenway Park. Now, Boston heads south for a three-game series against the Miami Marlins. The series begins Monday night at loanDepot park. The Red Sox enter Miami with a 71-59 record. The Marlins sit at 67-64 and remain in the playoff race. Therefore, this series carries plenty of importance for both clubs.
Boston Takes Down Arizona
The Red Sox opened the Arizona series with an offensive explosion. Boston crushed the Diamondbacks 11-1 in the opener. The Red Sox collected 16 hits during the dominant victory. Mickey Gasper and Willson Contreras both hit solo home runs. Caleb Durbin and Ceddanne Rafaela each collected three hits. Gasper and Wilyer Abreu also drove in two runs apiece. Boston attacked Arizona pitching throughout the game. Brayan Bello earned the victory after working 4⅔ innings in relief. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out four hitters. The Red Sox then continued that offensive momentum Tuesday.
Boston defeated Arizona 9-4 to secure the series victory. Adley Rutschman delivered one of the night’s biggest moments. Rutschman hit his first home run with Boston since joining the team. He finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Mickey Gasper also continued his impressive offensive stretch. He collected two hits, two walks, and two RBIs. Boston recorded 13 hits and scored 20 runs across two games. The Diamondbacks avoided the sweep Wednesday. Arizona defeated Boston 7-6 in 10 innings. Nolan Arenado delivered the decisive broken-bat RBI single. Despite the loss, Boston still won the series. That result also gave the Red Sox a much-needed series victory after three straight series losses.
Giants Bring Drama to Fenway
Boston then welcomed the San Francisco Giants for another three-game series. The opener immediately produced more offensive fireworks. The Red Sox defeated San Francisco 6-4 on Friday. Willson Contreras supplied the biggest blow. Contreras launched a three-run homer during the third inning. That blast helped Boston take control of the game. The series also brought Rafael Devers back to Fenway Park. The Giants acquired Devers from Boston earlier this season. Red Sox fans greeted their former star with loud boos throughout the series.
Devers struggled during his return. He went 0-for-4 with a walk in the series opener. Boston then won another close game Saturday. The Red Sox walked off the Giants 3-2. Ceddanne Rafaela delivered the decisive play during the ninth inning. San Francisco controlled much of the game before Boston rallied late. Rookie Blade Tidwell gave the Giants an excellent start. He threw 5⅔ scoreless innings and struck out seven. Still, Boston found a way to win. That comeback gave the Red Sox another series victory.
Boston Completes the Sweep
The Red Sox finished the Giants series Sunday with another comeback. Boston defeated San Francisco 5-4 to complete the sweep. The Giants jumped ahead early before Boston answered. Jake Bennett worked seven innings for Boston. He allowed four runs, including three earned, while striking out six. Ceddanne Rafaela continued his strong series with three hits. He also drove in two runs. Nick Sogard added a double and a home run. Mickey Gasper delivered a go-ahead pinch-hit double. The bullpen then protected Boston’s advantage. Tyron Guerrero and Aroldis Chapman combined for two scoreless innings. That helped Boston finishes the sweep. The Red Sox now have plenty of confidence. They also continue receiving contributions from players throughout the roster.
Miami Presents Another Challenge
The Red Sox now travel to Miami for three games. Boston faces a Marlins team that continues fighting for postseason positioning. Miami enters Monday with a 67-64 record. The Marlins also arrive after sweeping Washington. That means Boston cannot afford to overlook its next opponent. Miami has momentum of its own. The Red Sox also need to maintain their recent offensive production. Boston scored 20 runs against Arizona. They then scored 14 runs during the Giants sweep. That production helped Boston overcome several close games. The pitching staff also needs to remain steady. Bennett’s seven-inning effort provided a major lift Sunday. The bullpen also continues to produce important late-game outs. Boston’s recent success shows its depth. Different players have stepped forward throughout the recent stretch. That could prove extremely important during the final weeks.
A Big Week Ahead
Boston enters Miami playing some of its better baseball. The Red Sox have won both recent series at Fenway Park. They also demonstrated their ability to win high-scoring games. However, the Marlins present another test. Miami remains close enough to the playoff picture to make every game meaningful. Boston also needs every victory possible in the Wild Card race. The Red Sox cannot afford to relax. They need strong starting pitching, timely hitting, and dependable bullpen work. If Boston continues getting contributions throughout the lineup, Miami becomes another opportunity. The Red Sox have already built momentum at Fenway. Now, they need to carry that momentum onto the road. A strong series against Miami could make the upcoming stretch even more important. For Boston, the message remains simple. Keep winning and keep the playoff push moving forward.
