AI Writes Most Boring Book Ever

Read Time:2 Minute, 4 Second

Ever do something you look back on later and realize it was a waste of time?

I’ve had this experience plenty of times and the most recent was reading a book about technology written completely by artificial intelligence.

That’s right – an entire book written by a machine. We are living in strange times.

Felt disconnected and disenchanted from the first sentence. Not a person anywhere to be recognized or mentally touched, just dry-as-Arizona information, sentences lacking vitality, a book without soul or character or emotion.

Nothing but word after word, sentence after sentence, of uninspiring prose from no one even approaching a human.

A tool prompted me to write about technology churning out bone-dry explanations that felt like mental torture, like reading tax regulations or a summary of insurance rules for insurance fanatics. Or a newsletter about real estate investment trust addendums.

On and on, page after page, this book was so dull it seemed to be actively offensive in its tedium causing me to keep checking to see how many more pages until this lousy literary experience would end so I could join the world of human emotions and feelings again, the arena where Sammy Sportface shines.

I don’t know what reading this book means. Maybe it was just the way the AI was prompted that ruined the experience for the reader. Maybe the prompt was “write the most painfully dull book ever. Don’t even try to make it relatable to a person. Keep it dry and impersonal. Strip the book of all human connection points.”

Flipping this around, maybe there is hope for us still. Since generative AI technology crashed onto our psychological shores in a tidal wave last year I’ve been open about my angst that it would write better than me and replace my job and I would have to become Sammy Sportface full-time time which isn’t anything any of us needs or asked for nor fantasizes about.

But maybe there’s hope after all. Maybe this technology just doesn’t have the pizzazz and pulsations of people. Maybe this is just a bunch of hype, a technological Nothingburger.

We don’t know. But I know this. Boring reading is a turn-off.

Shock the reader. Rock the reader.

Knock his block off.

Get this into your bone box: Sammy Sportface is still swinging.

For you.

For the Baby Boomer Brotherhood.

Ain’t no technology gonna take this brother down.
