Wouldn’t it be interesting, not to mention emotionally dicey, to hear what people say about you to others but not to your face? You’d learn a lot about what people really think about you. This behavior is rampant and has been since the dinosaurs.
Every day across all seven continents these side conversations happen but the people being talked usually don’t hear the comments, and that’s good for everybody involved because most of the comments are probably not all flowery.
But sometimes things leak. Sammy Sportface had this unsettling experience one morning this week. He was fully engaged in his before-7:30 am spitball session with his Idea Man trying to figure out what Sammy Sportface should blog about that day to trigger more clickbait. The Red Bull-Mountain Dew-tenored bull session flew off, like a bird without a wing, on disconnected and random tangents with more than too many interruptions and disagreements, and an astounding lack of coherent thinking throughout especially on the part of Sportface.
Sportface and Idea Man bounced off of each others’ noggins fresh angles and twists and new wrinkles but nothing was sticking or made any sense. Idea Man would throw something out and Sportface would interrupt him and sharply slant to a completely impertinent topic.
The call wrapped up as aimlessly, inconclusively, and indecisively as when it began. Another day, another fruitless bull session shattered into fragments.
“Later, Sportface,” Idea Man said.
Unwittingly, or perhaps wittingly, and we may never know for sure, Idea Man didn’t turn his phone off right away so Sportface could hear Idea Man in his office shouting to some random dude in his office. “That guy is f——- crazy.”
Was Idea Man referring to Sportface Sportface thought to himself. Does he really think Sportface is crazy? And if he thinks this how many other members of the Baby Boomer Brotherhood think the same thing? Or was he talking about some other crazy guy in his office?
These questions are disquieting at best. If Sammy Sportface is crazy, then is everything he writes crazy, too? Can a crazy person write sports blogs that people want to read? Should they? What’s in it for them?
Is Sammy Sportface out of his mind?
And if he is, what will become of the Baby Boomer Brotherhood and its mission?
