What are we supposed to do now? How should we react to our team, Wake Forest, losing to Carolina by a plethora of points Monday night? Should we turn away from our team? Should we be loyal? Is this team worthy of our time and respect? When things get tough, as they are now, how should we support our alma mater basketball team at this most conspicuous mid-season fork in the road?
I say we call on all the positive thinkers we can think of Tony Robbins, Norman Vincent Peale, and OG Mandino. We need to listen to their tapes and podcasts, read their books, and sign up for their seminars. They’ll teach us how to think upbeat thoughts when our instincts are to get down on the floor and abandon who we are and the team we love. They’ll remind us that anything can be accomplished if we just believe in ourselves and our Wake Forest hoopers. All we have to do is believe and they’ll achieve. Ask and we shall receive.
Aim low, boring. Aim high, soaring.
Tony Robbins will show us how to walk on fire with our bare feet. Mind over fire. He’ll show us how to look at a two-by-four and imagine breaking it with our forearm and then do it. Norman Vincent Peale will read us passages from his bestselling book, The Power of Positive Thinking, and we’ll realize that anything can be accomplished if we put our minds to it. Og Mandino will do something similar. So will Deepak Chopra. He’ll remind us that it’s not our bodies that we need to control. It’s our minds. He’ll tell us we don’t need to take any pills but believe in the natural abilities of our true selves while in a state of utter serenity.
We will be enriched and spiritually elevated by immersing ourselves in the wise teachings of these positive-thinking gurus. We will realize that all we have to do is envision our team turning things around and playing better in the next game and the next after that and they’ll be on their way to the March Madness Tournament.
If we can picture it, if we can imagine it, if we believe it, the Deacs can do it.
