The prior week in MLB was about a pair of starting pitchers making history on the mound, and a veteran player gets released by an American League team.

Baltimore Orioles Starting Pitcher John Means Tosses No-Hitter

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher John Means made history last week against the Seattle Mariners as he tossed a no-hitter against them.

This was the 10th no-hitter in Orioles history, and the first four pitchers combined to accomplish the same feat facing the Oakland Athletics on July 13, 1991.

Jim Palmer did the last individual no-hitter in franchise history in 1969.

This snapped the longest active drought without a solo no-hitter, per ESPN Stats & Info.

The Pittsburgh Pirates now have the longest streak without an individual no-hitter after John Candelaria was successful in 1976.

Means was superb in the outing as he matched a career-high with 12 strikeouts on 113 pitches while throwing 79 for strikes.

He got ahead of nearly every batter he faced by throwing first-pitch strikes to 26 of 27 batters.

The Mariners had just one baserunner in the game as it occurred on a dropped third strike.

Means became the first pitcher to have a non-perfect no-hitter in which his team did not walk or hit a batter or allow a runner to reach by error, per MLB Stats.

Means joins Felix Hernandez as the only American League pitchers to strike put 12 or more batters without surrendering a walk in a no-hitter, per Stats by STATS.

The no-hitter by Means was memorable as it is a moment he will never forget.

Cincinnati Reds Starting Pitcher Wade Miley Throws Makes History with No-Hitter

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Wade Miley was spectacular in his last start as he tossed the 17th no-hitter in Reds history against the Cleveland Indians.

This was the fourth no-hitter of the season.

Miley struck out eight batters on 114 pitches, yielding one walk and having another baserunner reach due to an error.

The remarkable achievement by Miley was the third complete game of his career and the first since throwing a five-hit shutout against the Kansas City Royals in 2016.

Miley is the first Reds pitcher to toss a no-hitter since Homer Bailey in 2013, per MLB Stats.

Miley completing the no-hitter marks the earliest there have been four no-hitters thrown in a season since 1917, per FOX Sports MLB.

Miley threw his no-hitter two days after Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher John Means also threw a no-hitter.

That is the shortest span between no-hitters since June 29, 1990, when Dave Stewart and Fernando Valenzuela both threw no-hitters on the same day, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Miley reached a significant career milestone by tossing the no-hitter.

Miley is the oldest National League pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Randy Johnson in 2004, per MLB Stats.

Los Angeles Angels Release Veteran Albert Pujols

The Los Angeles Angels have released veteran Albert Pujols, per a team announcement.

Pujols was in the final year of a 10-year, $240-million that he signed with the Angels.

Pujols has struggled this year with the Angels, as indicated by him posting a .198 batting average and .622 OPS in 24 games with five home runs, 12 RBIs, and one stolen base.

Pujols wanted to be released if his playing time would be greatly reduced by the team, per Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY.

The release is surprising as it was expected that he would finish the 2021 season with the Angels.

Pujols has had a phenomenal career and is bound for Cooperstown when eligible.
