Miami Marlins Starting Pitcher Sandy Alcantara Underwent Tommy John Surgery, Out for 2024 Season

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara underwent Tommy John surgery several days ago, and he will be sidelined for all of the 2024 season, per an announcement.

The recovery period for starting pitchers who undergo this procedure usually is 12-18 months.

Alcantara was placed on the injured list in early September with a right forearm flexor strain, and an MRI later showed it was a UCL sprain.

He did make a rehab appearance but was shut down at the end of Sept. after feeling forearm tightness.

He pitched well for the Marlins in 2023 as he posted a 4.14 ERA in 184 2/3 innings pitched (28 starts) with 151 strikeouts, 48 walks issued, 22 home runs yielded, a 108 ERA+, 4.03 FIP, and a 1.21 WHIP.

He had better results during the 2022 season for the Marlins, in which he won the National League Cy Young Award.

He led the league in innings pitched and complete games at 228.2 and six, respectively.

The right-handed pitcher posted a 2.28 ERA and tallied 207 strikeouts, including a 180 ERA+, 2.99 FIP, and a 0.98 WHIP.

The Marlins will miss his presence in the starting rotation next season, and hopefully, he will have no setbacks in the recovery process.

San Diego Padres Shortstop Manny Machado Underwent Elbow Tendon Repair Surgery

According to a team announcement, San Diego Padres shortstop Manny Machado underwent elbow tendon repair surgery.

Machado is expected to recover within four-to-six months, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

The star shortstop had been dealing with an elbow problem for the past two seasons.

The elbow injury forced him to be their designated hitter as the regular season was winding down.

Machado was still playing because the Padres had a slim chance of making the playoffs as a wild-card team, but the club came up short in that endeavor.

The infielder had a decent 2023 season for the Padres.

He compiled a .258 batting average and .782 OPS in 138 games with 140 hits, 75 runs scored, 21 doubles, 30 home runs, 91 RBIs, three stolen bases, and a 115 OPS+.

Machado might not be ready to start the season next year because of the surgery.

The Padres could look different next year as key players will be free agents, and the club might trade outfielder Juan Soto.

San Diego Padres Manager Bob Melvin Will Return in 2024

San Diego Padres president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller said that manager Bob Melvin will return as manager in 2024, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

Preller and Melvin do not have the best relationship, as there was a report by Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, which one player called “unfixable.”

Melvin signed a three-year deal with the Padres in March 2022.

The Padres were a major disappointment this season as they finished the 2023 season with an 82-80 record despite having the third-highest payroll in MLB.
