The last week in MLB was about a starting pitcher in the National League who is out for the season with an elbow injury, an outfielder continues to make history, and a club in the American League places their shortstop on the injured list with a foot injury.

Miami Marlins Starting Pitcher Sandy Alcantara Out For Season with UCL Injury

The Miami Marlins will be without a critical part of their starting rotation moving forward, as starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara is out for the season with a UCL sprain in his elbow.

According to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, Alcantara experienced forearm tightness after a rehab assignment and will not pitch again this season.

The loss of Alcantara is enormous for the Marlins as they’re fighting for a wild-card spot in the National League.

The right-hander pitched well for the Marlins in 2023.

He posted a 4.14 ERA in 184 2/3 innings pitched (28 starts) with 151 strikeouts, 48 walks, 22 home runs allowed, three complete games, a 108 ERA+, 4.04 FIP, and a 1.21 WHIP.

Alcantara did regress slightly from winning the National League Cy Young Award in 2022, when he posted a 2.28 ERA in 228 2/3 innings pitched (32 starts) with six complete games, 207 strikeouts, 50 walks yielded, 16 home runs surrendered, a 178 ERA+, 2.99 FIP, and a 0.98 WHIP.

He threw 205 2/3 innings (33 starts) in 2021, and the high amount of innings probably led to him having an elbow injury.

If the Marlins qualify for the postseason, they must do it without Alcantara.

Atlanta Braves Outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. Posts Historic Feat

Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. has had an otherworldly 2023 season and made more history several days ago.

He crushed his 40th home run of the season against Washington Nationals starting pitcher Patrick Corbin to become the only player in MLB history to hit 40 home runs and accumulate 60 stolen bases in a season.

He is also fifth player in MLB history to have 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a year.

Acuna has played a significant role in the Braves’ success during the 2023 campaign.

The outfielder is the favorite to win the NL MVP and has the statistics to back up that claim.

He has compiled a .337 batting average and 1.013 OPS in 152 games with 143 runs scored, 209 hits, 34 doubles, four triples, 40 home runs, 101 RBIs, and 68 stolen bases.

He also leads the NL with a .415 on-base percentage, 371 total bases, and a 168 OPS+.

He has been remarkable for the Braves, and they will be counting on him to continue producing when the postseason begins.

Minnesota Twins Place Shortstop Carlos Correa on Injured List with Foot Injury

The Minnesota Twins have placed shortstop Carlos Correa on the injured list with plantar fasciitis, per a team announcement.

He was forced to leave a game early last week due to the injury.

Twins bench coach Jayce Tingler mentioned several days ago the club expects Correa to be ready for the start of the playoffs, per Bobby Nightengale of the Star Tribune.

Correa has had a decent 2023 season for the Twins, posting a .230 average and .711 OPS in 135 games with 60 runs scored, 118 hits, 29 doubles, two triples, 18 home runs, 65 RBIs, and a 94 OPS+.
