The prior week in MLB was about a starting pitcher making history, a pitcher undergoes surgery, and an outfielder in the National League is placed on the injured list.

San Diego Padres Starting Pitcher Joe Musgrove Tosses First No-Hitter in Franchise History

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Joe Musgrove accomplished something in his last start several days ago against the Texas Rangers that no pitcher had done in the history of the franchise had done.

He tossed a no-hitter facing the Rangers, giving the Padres the first no-hitter in franchise history.

Musgrove, who grew up in the San Diego area, ended a 53-year drought in which the Padres were the only team in MLB to throw a no-hitter.

Musgrove was making his second start for the Padres as they acquired him in the offseason via trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates was stellar in the outing.

He struck out 10 batters and threw 77 of his 112 pitches for strikes.

Musgrove made the only mistake in the fourth inning as he hit Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo with a pitch.

In the modern era, he became the eighth pitcher to throw a no-hitter in his first or second start with a team.

The last pitcher to earn that achievement was Clay Buchholz with the Boston Red Sox in 2007, per ESPN Stats & Info.

The Padres as a franchise had gone 8,205 games without a no-hitter, the second-longest streak in MLB history, per Stats By STATS.

Musgrove’s no-hitter had a unique aspect as he did not throw a complete game in his previous 84 starts.

Musgrove’s outing was significant as tossing a no-hitter is very special, but doing it for a team, he grew up watching made it more special.

Catch him play later today against the Pirates where the Padres opened as favorites to win, according to Sports Betting Dime.

The reliever is expected to be sidelined between three to four months as he recovers from the operation, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

The Athletics signed Rosenthal to a one-year deal during the offseason to be their closer.

Rosenthal is coming off a brilliant 2020 season as he split time between the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres.

He authored a 1.90 ERA in 23 2/3 innings pitched with 38 strikeouts, eight walks issued, two home runs surrendered, a 237 ERA+, 2.22 FIP, and 0.84 WHIP.

Los Angeles Dodgers Place Outfielder Cody Bellinger on Injured List with Calf Contusion

The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed outfielder Cody Bellinger on the injured list retroactive to April 6 with a left calf contusion, per a team announcement.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts mentioned that before being placed on the IL, Bellinger’s calf had made “steady improvement,” per Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times.

The outfielder suffered the injury several days ago against the Oakland Athletics as he was trying to beat out an infield single and was spiked by A’s reliever Reymin Guduan.

Bellinger had started the 2021 season slow as he was four-for-19 in four games before the injury.
