PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The bats went off in a collective fashion for the Texas Southern baseball team as a hot start and an equally effective finish helped them beat the Prairie View A&M Panthers 14-4 in a game that was called after seven innings, extending their series win streak since 2016.

The visitors set the tone for how the game would turn out as a fielding error by the PVAMU infield at the start of the first allowed them to score their first two runs through a Roderick Coffee sacrifice fly and Jordan Vidato’s RBI infield single to shortstop.

Nevertheless, PV mustered a three-run response in the bottom half of the first thanks to consecutive RBI base hits by Avery Williams and Brayden Johnson, giving them the 3-2 lead heading into the second.

Despite the setback, TSU immediately took control of the game by the third inning when catcher Juan Sanchez hit the team’s second grand slam of the year to deep left field for a 7-3 score, creating a plentiful cushion the visitors would inevitably not relinquish again.

In the fourth, following PV’s fourth run, TSU’s three-hole and hottest batter thus far, Oscar Ponce, blasted a solo homer to left-center field, his sixth of the year, growing his team’s lead to 8-4.

With neither team stimulating further offense since the contest’s midway point by the start of the seventh, TSU woke up again and put the game out of reach by batting around the order and scoring six runs. Ponce and Jordan Vidato restarted the onslaught with run-producing base hits to left field and were followed by Tyrese Clayborne with his 2-RBI double. Later in the inning and during Justin Cooper’s second at-bat, Clayorne scored at the plate by a passed ball misplay by PVAMU’s catcher, driving TSU’s lead to 14-4 and prompting the umpires to call the game.

Of the 12 players used by Texas Southern in their batting lineup, half managed to string multiple hits on Sunday against PVAMU. Ponce led the way with his 3-for-4 line which included three runs, two RBIs, and the home run from the fourth. The SWAC Co-Hitter of the Week extended his hitting streak to 13 games by the end of this series with his 7-of-13 showing in its three games.

Cooper, Vidato, Clayborne, Sanchez, and Avery Chatman all had two hits alongside at least one run scored and an RBI to their name. Coffee contributed to the offense by going one-for-two and having a walk and a scored run. Besides not pulling a hit, Thompson reached base on three walks which eventually converted to two runs.

Bryson Armstrong came on in relief once again and subdued the PVAMU offense to two hits, no runs, two walks, and two strikeouts for 4.2 innings, his longest outing since March 7 also against PVAMU.

Up next for the Tigers, they will face the Oklahoma Sooners of the Big 12 Conference for a two-game series that is set to begin on April 13 at 4 p.m.
