NGSCSports Wins Journalism Award for Winter Olympics Coverage

Without sending a reporter to the Winter Olympic Games, and showing flagrant disregard for reporting what actually happened and what was important, NGSCSports nevertheless has won a journalism award for its editorial coverage of the Games.

The Internet sports content site won the award from the American Journalism Society for “most inaccurate, misguided, unfocused, and scattershot coverage of the Winter Olympics.”

“We take a scattershot approach to most things we cover including big events such as the Olympics,” said Ralph Jerry Garcia, president of NGSCSports. “We like to mix in Boston College basketball game summaries with analysis of Winter Olympics snowboarding. No other sports blog packages up content this way and we have convinced ourselves it’s a differentiator.”

The award comes as a bit of a head-scratcher given that no one from NGSCSports is in attendance at the Games and none of the coverage has been relevant to even the most open-minded readers.

“We like to cover events that we don’t attend because we feel it gives us a unique perspective on the stories,” added Garcia. “This time around we had Sammy Sportface do the write-ups, and so far, based on our analytics, virtually no one is reading them because they don’t believe what Sammy writes. To us, that’s valuable business intelligence we will be using to allure more visitors to our site.”

This award marks the first time that NGSCSports has won a journalism award of any kind. Granted, it’s a dubious award because it’s not very complimentary about the quality of the coverage; in fact, the award highlights how bad it has been. But nonetheless, it’s an award. So there’s that.

“Here at NGSCSports we’re not picky about the types of awards we win as long as they are awards,” said Garcia. “Any publicity is good publicity.”

Going forward, the site plans to continue it’s scattershot approach to covering the Winter Olympics because it’s a formula that seems to be working on some level.

“The good news is this Winter Olympics will be over soon and we won’t have to worry about the quality of our coverage much longer,” said Garcia. “We plan to shift Sammy Sportface’s attention over the coming weeks to writing about the Professional Bowlers Tour.”
