Donte DiVincenzo will not return to the Golden State Warriors. After spending a single season with the Warriors, his time is up and the New York Knicks are a team targeting DiVincenzo in free agency.

Why is this move by the Knicks an important one? Here are four definitive reasons.

1. He will team up with his old Villanova teammates.

DiVincenzo is not just any player as he played on the Villanova Wildcats with Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. Having the same teammates from college is a good recipe for team bonding. Reuniting the three players will improve team chemistry and will lead to better communication and more success.

2. He shares the ball.

Oftentimes, when a player joins a new team, he wants attention and calls for instant gratification from the fans. DiVincenzo is not that type of player. Along with operating well on the scoring end, he’s also a nice passer and makes opportunities for his teammates.

Coming off a season with 3.5 assists per game and potentially teaming up with his former friends, he’s bound to share the ball more.

3. He is an effective role player.

The New York Knicks need to go after at least a single star player, but while getting a star is something the Knicks should do, it’s not the only thing they should do.

Having too many stars on one team can force players to demand attention. Stars want money and the spotlight. An example of this was when Kristaps Porzingis and Luka Doncic weren’t meant for each other as they were both up-and-coming stars in Dallas.

DiVincenzo is a player that will fit into and accept his role on a team. If the team needs DiVincenzo to switch between the point guard and shooting guard or come off the bench, he would do it if it means helping the team.

4. He’s a good shooter.

DiVincenzo might be an unselfish player, but that doesn’t mean he can’t go on a shooting tear. During the Lakers playoff series this year, DiVincenzo scored double-digits in two games and shot over 50 percent in both of them.

Jalen Brunson needs a lot of help as he scored 31.0 Points per game in the Conference Finals against the Miami Heat. If the Knicks can get another reliable scoring option, they will be in a better position next season.

Donte DiVincenzo is a valuable player with a lot of potential. It’s still unsure where he’s going in free agency, but if the Knicks can pick him up, they will get further into the postseason than they did this year!
