During the summer, a lot of NBA teams’ offseason agendas consist of acquiring talent, so they can get closer to their championship aspirations. Kristaps Porzingis was part of a three-team trade and was sent to the Boston Celtics.

The Boston Celtics definitely got closer to championship aspirations. Here’s why.

How Boston Finished Last Season

The Boston Celtics finished second place in the Eastern Conference last season and they were eliminated 4-3 by the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals. Even though the Celtics almost came all the way back, the 0-3 start is unforgettable. One of the key reasons for the Celtics’ slipped performance was their big men.

The Celtics’ tallest, active big man was Al Horford standing at 6’9, but Horford isn’t the same player as he was on the Atlanta Hawks. He’s 37 and can give you a great performance in one game followed by a string of bad games, primarily from the shooting aspect. In the entire postseason, Horford averaged 6.7 Points a game on 38.6 percent from the field and 29.8 percent from three-point territory.

Porzingis can help the Celtics improve.

The acquisition of  Kristaps Porzingis is a big stepping stone for the Boston Celtics. The power forward stands at 7’3 and is the optimal, modern stretch-big. At his height, Porzingis can monitor the painted area as well as score from behind the arc with ease. Last season, Porzingis averaged 23.2 PPG on 49.8 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three through 65 games.

The 2023 NBA Champions are Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets, the Celtics made a smart off-season move. NBA teams need to develop their four and five positions. Doing so would improve their chances of defending against Jokic and make it harder for him to defend his title.

Porzingis’ size and broad set of skills make it easier for the Celtics on offense and defense. Though Porzingis is prone to injury, he’s young and can become a significant impact along with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in the long run.

The Boston Celtics have the talent they need to be a championship-caliber team. Therefore, as an early 2024 NBA Championship prediction, the Celtics will win the NBA Finals in six games!
