The prior week in MLB was about a third baseman in the National league opting into the rest of his current contract, a team in the American League is far apart in contract talks with a player they are trying to re-sign, and a starting pitcher is returning for one more season.

St. Louis Cardinals Third Baseman Nolan Arenado Opting Into Remainder of Contract

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado has decided to opt into the remainder of his contract, per Katie Woo of The Athletic.

Arenado will make $144 million over the five years left on his deal after declining an opt-out clause in his contract.

He had signed an eight-year, $260-million deal with the Colorado Rockies in February 2019.

Arenado opting in is good news for the Cardinals since he was coming off a stellar 2022 season and could have elected to become a free agent.

The third baseman posted a .293 batting average and .891 OPS in 148 games with 73 runs scored, 163 hits, 42 doubles, 30 home runs, 103 RBIs, and five stolen bases.

He remained steady with defense over at third base and is likely to receive his 10th straight Gold Glove when offseason awards are handed out.

Arenado will play a crucial role in the Cardinals achieving success next season.

Boston Red Sox Far Apart in Negotiations with Third Baseman Rafael Devers

The Boston Red Sox and third baseman Rafael Devers are far apart in contract negotiations for a contract extension, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

The Red Sox had increased their offer by over $200 million, but Devers is seeking at least a 10-year, $300-million deal, says Heyman.

Devers is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2023 season.

The third baseman had a solid campaign with the Red Sox last year.

He compiled a .295 batting average and .879 OPS in 141 games with 84 runs scored, 164 hits, 42 doubles, 27 home runs, 88 RBIs, and three stolen bases.

The MLB team faces an offseason with uncertainty as shortstop Xander Bogaerts, and designated hitter J.D. Martinez is expected to be free agents.

The team hopes to sign Devers at their price range and then sign Bogaerts later in the offseason.

From a payroll perspective, it would not be logical to sign Devers at his asking price of $300 million and re-sign Bogaerts.

St. Louis Cardinals Starting Pitcher Adam Wainwright Will Return for Final Season in 2023

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright is not entirely done playing.

The right-handed pitcher is returning for his 19th season with the team next year, per a team announcement.

Wainwright did mention that the 2022 campaign could have been his last season, but he pitched so well last year for the club.

He posted a 3.71 ERA in 191 2/3 innings pitched (32 starts) with one complete game, 143 strikeouts, 54 walks allowed, 16 home runs yielded, a 103 ERA+, and a 3.66 FIP.

Wainwright has won 195 games and tossed 2,567 1/3 innings, all in a Cardinals uniform.

He has had a great MLB career with the Cardinals, and seeing him pitch one more year with them will be good for the sport.
