The prior week in MLB was about a manager in the American League who was fired.

A starting pitcher will undergo season-ending surgery, and a pitcher in the National League will be shut down for several weeks.

Los Angeles Angels Fire Manager Joe Maddon

The Los Angeles Angels decided to fire manager Joe Maddon last week and selected Phil Nevin as his interim replacement, per a team announcement.

The Angels had lost 12 straight games when they relieved Maddon of his duties, and the losing streak ballooned to 14 consecutive losses before winning a game several days ago.

The Angels enduring this long losing streak was a surprise as they just struggled, and their general manager Perry Minassian felt it was time for a change.

“It’s something I thought would never happen three weeks ago … I love Joe Maddon.

According to Sam Blum of The Athletic, I love the person, and I love the conversations,” Minassian said.

“Waking up today, I felt like it was the right decision.”

Minassian mentioned that Nevin would manage for the remainder of the season, per Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.

Maddon was in the final season of a three-year deal he signed in 2020.

He finished his tenure with the Angels compiling a 130-148 win-loss record and did not lead the club to a winning record or postseason appearance.

Detroit Tigers Starting Pitcher Casey Mize Will Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, said manager A.J. Hinch on Friday, per Evan Woodberry of MLive.com.

The operation means that Mize probably will not pitch again until 2024.

The typical recovery period for pitchers undergoing this procedure is between 12-15 months.

Mize, who was already on the 60-day injured list due to a sprained medial ligament, was shut down from throwing earlier this week after experiencing more elbow soreness while playing catch at 90 feet.

Dr. Keith Meister found that the UCL for Mize had been stretched to the point that it has lost elasticity, per Jason Beck of MLB.com.

The 2022 MLB season for Mize ends with him starting two games and throwing 10 innings.

The surgery for Mize is another blow to a Tigers rotation that has been ravaged by injuries this year.

Tyler Alexander, Matt Manning, Michael Pineda, and Eduardo Rodriguez are all on the 15-day injured list with various injuries.

Meanwhile, Spencer Turnbull is still rehabbing from his own Tommy John surgery last year.

Los Angeles Dodgers Starting Pitcher Walker Buehler Shut Down Several Weeks with Elbow Strain

The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without starting pitcher Walker Buehler for several weeks after an MRI on his elbow revealed a ligament strain, per Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the injury would not require surgery, and he expects Buehler to pitch again this season.

Buehler had left his last start several days ago against the San Francisco Giants after experiencing discomfort during the third inning.

The loss of Buehler is significant for the Dodgers as he was leading the rotation this season.
