The Tampa Bay Rays are headed back to the top of the American League East. Tampa Bay clinched the division Tuesday night with a 6-1 win over the New York Yankees. The Rays secured the crown during the second game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. The victory also gave Tampa Bay the American League’s top seed. That means the Rays hold home-field advantage through the AL Championship Series. They also earned a bye through the Wild Card Series. This marks the fifth AL East title in franchise history. The Rays previously won the division in 2008, 2010, 2020 and 2021. That makes 2021 the last time Tampa Bay finished atop the division. The Rays finished fourth in the AL East during 2025. They then turned things around dramatically one year later.
Rays Finish the Job in the Bronx
Tampa Bay entered Tuesday needing one victory to clinch. The Rays had two opportunities during the doubleheader against New York. The Yankees took the first game 2-0 behind Carlos Rodón. He threw eight scoreless innings and kept New York’s hopes alive. However, Tampa Bay answered in the nightcap. Drew Rasmussen took the mound with the division race hanging in the balance. He delivered one of the biggest performances of his career. Rasmussen carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Heliot Ramos ended the bid with a leadoff double. Rasmussen still finished with 11 strikeouts and three walks over 6⅔ innings. The Rays gave Rasmussen enough offense to work with. Tampa Bay eventually pulled away for the 6-1 victory. That win officially ended the AL East race.
A Remarkable Turnaround
The accomplishment carries extra meaning after what happened one year ago. Tampa Bay finished the 2025 season with a 77-85 record. The Rays placed fourth in the AL East and missed the postseason. The club entered 2026 with plenty of questions. Many preseason projections expected Tampa Bay to finish near the bottom of the division. Instead, the Rays built one of baseball’s best records. Tampa Bay improved to 96-61 with Tuesday night’s victory. The team finished the night 35 games above .500. The Rays also reached the postseason for the first time since 2023. They lost to the Texas Rangers in the Wild Card Series that year. Now, Tampa Bay enters October with the American League’s top seed.
Home Field Matters Again
The Rays will return to Tropicana Field for the postseason. Tampa Bay finished the regular season’s home schedule with a 55-26 record at the Trop. That marked the third-best home winning percentage in franchise history. The Rays went 8-1 during their final homestand. That stretch included series wins over the Astros, Athletics and Red Sox. The strong home record gives Tampa Bay another important advantage heading into October. MLB scheduled the Rays to host Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday, October 3. Their opponent will come from the Wild Card Series.
Five Years Since the Last Time
The Rays last won the AL East in 2021. That team followed the 2020 club that won the division during the shortened 60-game season. Tampa Bay then reached the World Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 2026 season creates another memorable chapter for the organization. Tampa Bay now owns five division titles since the franchise’s first in 2008. The Rays have repeatedly found ways to compete inside one of baseball’s toughest divisions. This year’s accomplishment stands out because of where the Rays started.
They entered the season after a losing campaign. They faced questions about their roster and their place in the AL East. Now, those questions have a much different answer. Tampa Bay has secured the division, the top American League seed and another postseason opportunity. The road to the American League pennant will run through Tampa Bay. For the first time since 2021, the Rays can celebrate an AL East title. This time, they did it by taking down the Yankees in the Bronx when the race reached its finish.
