Is Mickelson as Big a Fraud as Tiger?

What’s happened to you, Phil Mickelson?

You were once such a crowd favorite. The golf galleries used to follow you around. You would smile and wave and sign autographs.

We worshiped your golf talent. You had it all: money, fame, a good life.

But somewhere along the way – it was long ago – you started gambling. Maybe it started for $100 for the winner of an 18-hole match. Then it got bigger like betting $100 per hole then $1,000 and so on.

This you did on the sly, not when the TV cameras were shining on you. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays with some random guys, bet some money for kicks because you had so much to blow.

But now we find out you owe some $60 million in gambling debt. You know, Phil, most people don’t make anywhere near $60 million after working for forty years. Gross behavior, Phil.

You had the money to spend and you took the risks and got those gambling highs. But there are also gambling lows. And they’re inevitable. Gamblers always end up losers.

You’ve been out of the spotlight lately which is so unlike you, usually Mr. Friendly and Cool. You seem to be hiding from something, wanting us not to know what you’re up to.

But now we know what you stand for. You signed up to take tens of millions of dollars to play on the Saudi Arabian golf tour. Your loyalty is to money, not to the PGA where you made tens of millions playing a game. Not to the fans. Phil Mickelson comes first.

You need to pay off heavy debts, so you’re playing golf sponsored by a country known for massive human rights violations. You don’t want us to make a big deal about you doing this, to think less of you, so you’re laying low.

But you’re still taking the money. Because once you pay off that debt, you’ll need all that money to keep gambling because you can’t stop, because you don’t want to, because you can’t, because you’re addicted, because you get a kick out of blowing money betting on golf matches and who knows what else.

I wrote a while back about Tiger Woods being pretty much a selfish jerk who is pretty much concerned with his riches and fame and glory. And no one else. And as you know at one point he also was – and may still be – all about having sex with all kinds of women.

I thought maybe you were a better person than Tiger, Mickelson, and not so selfish. But it’s becoming more clear to me – and I believe many others – that you’ve been hiding the truth from us about your gambling indiscretions. Feels like when Tiger snuck around doing all those sexual indiscretions.

You’re showing just how willing you are to take money from bad people to address your bad behaviors.

You’re becoming less impressive.

You’re becoming less trustworthy, less worthy of adulation.

You’re becoming more like Tiger.

You can’t be proud of that.
