We all know what happened last Fall with the Wake Forest football team. Mountains of mistakes – and the one I still can’t get out of my mind is the unnecessary roughness penalty late against Duke that gave them an easy field goal to win the game when all we had to do was not make a penalty.
But let’s not dwell anymore on that. Let’s get focused on all the mistakes the team cannot make this season on their journey to the national championship.
Mistake to Avoid 1
There cannot be jump ball plays in the endzone where the taller receiver on the other team leaps higher and catches the ball for a touchdown. The balls must be slapped down by the defensive backs. It’s a mistake to think a national championship is doable if we make the mistake of letting receivers out-duel the team for touchdowns.
Mistake to Avoid 2
The offense cannot abandon the delayed run pass option offense (RPO) even if it’s not working in the first few possessions of games. The team’s best strategic differentiator is the delayed RPO which is the main reason the team rose to prominence nationally. Teams struggled to stop it and they will continue to if we keep with it.
Mistake to Avoid 3
Negative rhetoric about how the team is playing would be a big mistake. Players, coaches, bloggers, and fans all have a duty to stay positive no matter what’s going on in the games. It would not be a bad idea for all of us to read the books The Power of Positive Thinking and Good to Great to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the importance of saying positive things if you want to win a national championship, and how to ascend from good to great.
Mistake to Avoid 4
Don’t buy into the up-and-down reactions of Sammy Sportface to how this team is playing. He is not a real person. His opinions don’t matter. Ignore him. Pretend he’s not here.
Mistake to Avoid 5
Under no circumstances should the jumbotron in the stadium stop playing loud music during commercial breaks because that’s our opportunity to stand up and dance and maybe get noticed on the jumbotron. Watching a football game is an emotionally charged experience, and we need to stand up and wiggle our hips to cut the tension.
