After an off day on Monday, the Boston College football team began their final week of summer camp on Tuesday morning. We are now two weeks away from the season opener on the road at Florida State. With weather being a bit uncertain last week, the Eagles have spent the past six days practicing inside at Fish Fieldhouse.

The best news that has come out of camp is that the team has remained healthy since they began getting ready for the upcoming season. On Sunday, the depth of the football team was on display. Redshirt freshman quarterback Jacobe Robinson took some snaps under center. The ESPN four-star recruit from Henderson, Texas spent all of last season watching from the sidelines. He showed off a good arm during drills and hooked up with WR Jaden Skeets on a 40-yard TD catch. Later on, he found Jayden McGowan for a catch-and-run score. While it would be great to suggest that starting QB Thomas Castellanos will be there from the start of the year until the very end,  wisdom says a qualified backup is always a wise idea.

Speaking of Castellanos, he continues to look in mid-season form as camp starts to close. On Sunday, he connected twice with tight end Kamari Morales. The second pass catch was a nice reception as Morales used a nice move to get past his defender to make the catch. Castellanos has looked good so far this summer as he learns a new offense that hopefully gives him the chance to show off his dual-threat ability.

Running back Jordan McDonald also had some good moments running through holes between the tackles opened up by an offensive line that should be one of BC’s strengths. The junior RB who arrived from UCF, gained 56 yards on 18 carries in 11 games. He averaged 3.1 yards a carry and did score three times. McDonald showed he could catch the ball out of the backfield in a limited role with a catch for 33 yards. What was said about the quarterback situation can be repeated with the running back core. You can never have enough of them.

With the final week of camp set to begin, this team needs to fine-tune things as they look ahead to the road test with the Seminoles on Labor Day night. It will be even more important to stay away from injuries that could make that season opener any more difficult than it already is.
