Western Pennsylvania is home to some of the best high school football in the United States. The WPIAL is well known for producing many of the greatest players in the history of football, including George Blanda, Mike Ditka, Aaron Donald, Tony Dorsett, Bill Fralic, Ty Law, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Joe Namath, and Darrell Revis among the most legendary.

The WPIAL Football Report is your resource for news, weekly picks, and rankings by Class, all brought to you by local sports writer Mike Drakulich (@PghSportsNation), who also covers Pitt Football and the Pittsburgh Steelers for NGSCSports.com.

The grueling two-a-day practices are all over, and all weight lifting, game video scouting, and hard work put forth by our local football athletes will rewarded when the Friday Night Lights brighten up the Western Pennsylvania skylines for the opening week of football in the WPIAL this weekend.

Yes indeed, the football season begins at many fields across the WPIAL at 7:00 PM this weekend, and there are all kinds of juicy match-ups to check out, including the KDKA Kickoff Classic hosted at The Wolvarena at Woodland Hills HS, featuring Lake (OH) vs McKeesport and Erie McDowell vs Woodland Hills on Friday night, and Clairton vs Steel Valley, St. Francis Academy (MD) vs Central Catholic, and Westinghouse vs Beaver on Saturday.

Be sure to check in weekly for weekly game picks and rankings. Locally, follow @PghSportsNation on X, as yours truly will be covering Aliquippa for the entire season, providing updates and scores.
