I’m starting to wonder what’s going on with the WNBA and the sports world in general.
You may not know this but there’s a glittery and growing trend going on before WNBA games. The players are walking through the stadium tunnels in increasingly snazzy outfits of all sorts designed to catch the eyes of video cameras and photographers, and I must say it’s quite a show. There’s a freshness to it.
The tunnel fashion shows are becoming every bit as central an attraction as the basketball games; I have a friend who watches the fashion shows but not the games and I’d bet he’s not the only one.
Intriguingly, WNBA players are embracing the attention strutting in with all kinds of different colors of clothing, styles, and fabrics – a new outfit seems to be the calling card for every game.
This isn’t basketball. It’s like a red carpet photo op, celebrities walking around as people look at them walk on by.
Frankly, I like the scene. It’s a refreshing visual to enjoy during the sports-watching experience. Beautiful athletes look good.
This new phenomenon feels like a sign of something larger going on in America about our tastes in entertainment and sports. I wonder if this tunnel fashion trend will become more of a constant in many other sports including pro football, basketball, baseball, swimming meets, and more.
I think so. Tunnel shows are just getting started. Part of the reason is the games themselves in many sports, namely the NFL, are not as entertaining anymore with all the commercials, tediously long under-the-hood play reviews, extended regular seasons, and less compelling non-continuous action. The product isn’t that good.
I happen to like watching Caitlin Clark play basketball because she’s exciting and different. So I’ll watch those games and the tunnel show. I am starting to learn about more of the players as much for seeing them in the tunnel as on the court. I care more now about more players in the WNBA so my interest in the entire league is growing.
When the NFL games start-up in a few weeks, I’m more likely to watch WNBA games instead because of the tunnel fashion shows and Caitlin Clark’s pursuit of this year’s WNBA title.
NFL pundits say Americans will turn away from the WNBA to watch NFL games. That may be true for some but not me. NFL games including the Super Bowl have become dull and not worth the time. I believe widespread gambling, Fantasy Football, and tailgate drinking parties are the biggest reasons the sport is so popular – not as much for the intriguing action on the field.
The way the NFL could stay popular – and get even more so – will be if they do more tunnel fashion shows as the players enter the stadium because I assume more women led by the Taylor Swift fandom would enjoy seeing that.
Where will this end? Will tunnel fashion shows become so big that the games will become secondary afterthoughts? How much money is in this for clothing fashion designers and the players wearing the hip outfits, and will it become so lucrative they will make more from the tunnel appearances than playing the games?
I can see this happening. The WNBA’s fashion shows will be a central driver of the league’s growth over the next several years.
Dressing up and showing that off will become a bigger business, giving new meaning to the term “tunnel vision.”
