The last week in MLB was about a draft pick agreeing to a record contract, a reliever being injured for a team in the American League, and an infielder being placed on the injured list.
Baltimore Orioles Sign First Overll Pick Jackson Holliday to Record Deal
The Baltimore Orioles and first overall pick shortstop Jackson Holliday have agreed to a record-breaking deal for a high-school player, per Jon Heyman of The New York Post.
No. 1 overall pick Jackson Holliday is in agreement with the Orioles on a record deal for a HS player, just a touch over No. 2 pick Druw Jones $8.185M deal. Holliday is a SS from Oklahoma and the son of Matt Holliday.

Holliday will receive $8.19 million, edging out the second overall pick Druw Jones who agreed to an $8.18-million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, per Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline.
No. 1 overall pick Jackson Holiday agrees with @Orioles for $8.19 million, which will eclipse No. 2 overall pick Druw Jones' $8,189,400 from @Dbacks as the most ever for HS player in history of the @MLBDraft. Old mark was $7,787,400 by Bobby Witt Jr. from @Royals in 2019.

The slot value for the top pick in the 2022 MLB Draft was $8,846,900.
Holliday, 18, was selected first overall by the Orioles after being named the Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year for the state of Oklahoma.
He is the son of former major-league player Matt Holliday.
The young and talented shortstop posted gaudy numbers this past season.
He had a .685 batting average and 1.392 OPS for his high school in Stillwater.
The younger Holliday broke J.T. Realmuto’s high-school record for hits in a season with 89 in 41 games.
The Orioles have a bright future as Holliday can be a tremendous player in their franchise for many years.
New York Yankees Reliever Michael King Out for Season with Elbow Fracture
Following last night’s game, the Yankees optioned OF Tim Locastro to Triple-A SWB.
Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
• Placed RHP Michael King on the 60-day IL with a right elbow fracture.— New York Yankees (@Yankees) July 23, 2022
The New York Yankees reliever Michael King has been diagnosed with a fracture in his right elbow and the injury will end his season, said Yankees manager Aaron Boone, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
Michael King’s elbow injury is season-ending, Aaron Boone said. King was sent back to New York for an MRI/CT scan to determine if there is ligament damage.

King suffered the injury a couple of days ago against the Baltimore Orioles.
The reliever walked to the dugout after throwing a pitch against the Orioles and was in pain.

The Yankees losing King for the rest of the year is a monumental loss as the right-handed pitcher has been one of the best pitchers in their bullpen.
King had posted a 2.29 ERA in 51 innings pitched (34 games) with one save, 66 strikeouts, 16 walks issued, three home runs surrendered, a 166 ERA+, 2.23 FIP, and 1.00 WHIP.
#Yankees GM Brian Cashman says Michael King’s season-ending elbow injury is a “big loss” and hopes he can “run into some things” before trade deadline.
And after a punishing month of work, echoes the sentiment of almost everyone in the industry: “I would move the draft.”— Gabe Lacques (@GabeLacques) July 23, 2022
The Yankees will be an active team with the trade deadline looming, and adding a reliever will be a top priority.
Boston Red Sox Place Third Baseman Rafael Devers on Injured List with Hamstring Injury
The Boston Red Sox have placed third baseman Rafael Devers on the injured list with right hamstring inflammation.
The #RedSox today announced the following roster moves:
– Placed 3B Rafael Devers on the 10-Day IL with right hamstring inflammation.
– Selected OF Jaylin Davis to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester.
-Transferred INF/OF Kiké Hernández to the 60-Day IL.— Red Sox (@RedSox) July 23, 2022
Devers suffered the injury several days ago against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The loss of Devers comes at a horrible time for the Red Sox, as they have struggled in July and are behind in the American League wild-card standings.
Devers was having a phenomena season before the injury occurred.
He compiled a .324 batting average and .981 OPS in 87 games with 62 runs scored, 29 doubles, one triple, 22 home runs, 55 RBIs, and leading the AL with 113 hits.
The Red Sox added outfielder Jaylin Davis to the roster from Triple-A in a corresponding move and transferred infielder/outfielder Enrique Hernandez to the 60-day injured list as he continues to recover from a hip strain.
The Red Sox will have to play better while Devers is recovering from his hamstring injury.
