The prior week in MLB was about a team in the National League who fired their manager.

A team in the American League signed a slugger to a multi-year extension. A first baseman is selected as player of the month.

Philadelphia Phillies Fire Manager Joe Girardi After Poor Start

Per a team announcement several days ago, the Philadelphia Phillies have decided to part ways with manager Joe Girardi.

The Phillies were third in the National League East division with a 22-29 win-loss record when they relieved Girardi of his duties.

The club has selected bench coach Rob Thomson to serve as their interim manager for the rest of the season.

The Phillies have been a major disappointment as they have struggled to find consistency on the baseball diamond in 2022.

Girardi, who previously managed the New York Yankees for 10 years from 2008-17, joined the Phillies as he was the replacement for Gabe Kapler ahead of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

The club posted a 28-32 record in his first season and improved with an 82-80 record with a full schedule last year.

The Phillies started the season poorly despite having the fourth-highest payroll in MLB.

This will be the first opportunity that Thomson will be the leader of a clubhouse, but he has plenty of coaching experience.

The 58-year-old has been the bench coach with the Phillies since 2018 and previously spent 28 years in the Yankees organization.

Houston Astros Sign Yordan Alvarez to Six-Year Extension

The Houston Astros have signed slugger Yordan Alvarez to a six-year contract extension worth $115 million, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.

The contract extension that starts next year keeps him under contract through the 2028 season, which covers all three years of arbitration and his first three years of free agency.

The total value of the extension is the most ever given to a player who primarily serves as a designated hitter and is second only to the $151-million deal the Astros inked to Jose Altuve.

In the Astros’ lineup last year, Alvarez was a force as he posted a .277 batting average and .877 OPS in 144 games with 35 doubles, 33 home runs, and 104 RBIs.

He is off to a fantastic start this MLB season, as indicated by his .284 average and .972 OPS in 47 games with five doubles, 15 home runs, and 33 RBIs.

The Astros made an intelligent decision by signing Alvarez to a multi-year extension.

St. Louis Cardinals First Baseman Paul Goldschmidt Named NL Player of the Month

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was selected as the National League player of the month for May.

Goldschmidt earned the honor by compiling a .404 average with 10 home runs, 33 RBIs, and 20 runs scored in 27 games last month.

The 23 extra-base hits by Goldschmidt set a new Cardinals record for the month of May.

The first baseman is having a phenomenal 2022 season as he has posted a .342 average in 52 games with 18 doubles, 12 home runs, 47 RBIs, and three stolen bases.

He also leads the National League in hits, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS, and OPS+ at 68, .424, .613, 1.037, and 199, respectively.
