The Florida Gators continued their strong start under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall. Florida defeated the Campbell Fighting Camels 52-3 Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The victory moved Florida to 2-0 on the season. Meanwhile, Campbell fell to 2-1 after its first loss. The Gators entered the game after crushing Florida Atlantic 66-21. Campbell arrived with plenty of confidence after opening the season 2-0. The Fighting Camels also beat No. 24 Western Carolina 28-19 the previous week. However, Florida quickly showed why this matchup heavily favored the Gators. Campbell opened the scoring with a 29-yard field goal in the first quarter. Florida answered with a 28-yard field goal from Patrick Durkin. Aaron Philo then gave the Gators their first touchdown.
Philo scored on a three-yard scramble late in the opening quarter. Florida took a 10-3 advantage into the second period. Then, the game completely changed. Florida exploded for 35 points during the second quarter. The Gators scored touchdowns in several different ways. They used their offense, special teams, and explosive plays to overwhelm Campbell. Vernell Brown III made perhaps the biggest impact on special teams. He returned two Campbell punts for touchdowns during the quarter. Those returns gave Florida tremendous momentum. They also showcased the Gators’ ability to create points without their offense touching the field. Florida’s offense kept rolling, too. Philo connected with Dallas Wilson for a 40-yard touchdown. Later, Philo found Brown for a 14-yard touchdown. Jadan Baugh also added a two-yard rushing touchdown before halftime.
Florida entered halftime with a commanding 45-3 lead. The Gators continued their dominance after halftime. Baugh delivered another explosive play early in the third quarter. He broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run. That touchdown pushed Florida’s advantage to 52-3. It also highlighted Baugh’s ability to change games with one carry. Baugh finished with 136 rushing yards on 14 attempts. He averaged nearly 10 yards per carry. His two touchdowns helped Florida maintain control throughout the afternoon. Philo also delivered an efficient performance at quarterback. He completed 16 of 21 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Dallas Wilson led Florida’s receivers. He finished with five catches for 104 yards and one touchdown. The Gators eventually turned to their depth as the game progressed. Tramell Jones Jr. also saw significant action under center. He completed eight of 11 passes for 58 yards. Florida’s defense also deserves plenty of credit. Campbell managed only 210 total yards throughout the game. The Fighting Camels struggled to consistently move the football against Florida’s defense. Kamden Sixkiller completed 16 of 30 passes for 127 yards. He did not throw a touchdown or interception. Campbell also struggled to establish its running game. The Gators finished the afternoon with 514 total yards. They averaged 8.3 yards per play against the Fighting Camels.
Florida also created several momentum-changing plays on special teams. Brown’s two punt returns showed how quickly the Gators can flip field position. Still, the game featured some areas for Florida to clean up. The Gators committed eight penalties for 95 yards. They also lost a fumble during the contest. Campbell committed seven penalties and lost two fumbles.
Even with those mistakes, Florida controlled the game from start to finish. The victory also continued Florida’s impressive history against FCS opponents. The Gators entered the matchup with a 25-1 record against FCS teams since 1981. This matchup marked the first meeting between Florida and Campbell. It also marked Campbell’s first game against an SEC opponent. Campbell had never faced an SEC team before Saturday. The Fighting Camels also entered the game seeking their first victory over an FBS opponent. Instead, Florida provided a difficult introduction to SEC football.
For Sumrall, the win provided another strong step forward. Florida now heads into its biggest challenge of the young season. The Gators travel to Auburn next Saturday for their SEC opener. That matchup will provide a much tougher test than either of Florida’s first two games. Still, Florida enters that contest with plenty of momentum. The offense has produced 118 points through two games. The Gators have also shown explosive ability in all three phases.
Most importantly, Florida continues to develop under its new coaching staff. The Campbell game gave the Gators another opportunity to build confidence. It also allowed younger players to gain valuable experience. Now, the stakes rise considerably. Florida’s trip to Auburn will show how much progress the Gators have made. For now, though, Sumrall and Florida can celebrate another convincing victory. The Gators handled Campbell from the opening quarter through the final whistle. They now turn their attention toward SEC competition. And that challenge begins at Auburn.
There is no suprise that the Florida Gators dominated this game.
