The Florida Gators begin a new era Saturday night in Gainesville. Florida hosts Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Kickoff comes at 7:45 p.m. ET. The opener marks the first game under head coach Jon Sumrall. It also introduces a new quarterback and offensive system. Florida enters the season after a disappointing 4-8 campaign in 2025. Sumrall now faces the challenge of rebuilding the program. Meanwhile, FAU enters its second season under coach Zach Kittley. The Owls bring plenty of offensive experience into Gainesville. That makes this opener more interesting than a typical nonconference game.
Florida Starts a New Era
Sumrall takes over after leading Tulane to success. He now inherits a roster with several intriguing pieces. The biggest question surrounded Florida’s quarterback competition. Aaron Philo ultimately won that battle. Philo transferred from Georgia Tech with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner. He appeared in eight games during his two seasons with the Yellow Jackets. Philo completed 57.8 percent of his passes for 938 yards. He also threw two touchdowns and three interceptions. However, Philo has not started a full college season. Therefore, his first start carries plenty of importance. Florida also features wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. The former Georgia Tech and Auburn player joins a talented receiver room. Vernell Brown III also returns for his second season. He earned third-team preseason All-SEC recognition as a return specialist. Those weapons could help Philo settle into the offense.
FAU Brings a Proven Quarterback
FAU presents a legitimate challenge through the air. Caden Veltkamp returns after a strong 2025 campaign. He completed 66.99 percent of his passes last season. Veltkamp threw for 3,641 yards and 24 touchdowns. However, he also threw 17 interceptions. FAU’s biggest threats. The Owls also return receiver Easton Messer. Messer caught 104 passes for 1,052 yards in 2025. He also scored six receiving touchdowns. His versatility makes him especially dangerous for Florida’s defense. As a result, Florida cannot overlook FAU’s passing attack. The Gators must pressure Veltkamp without creating easy opportunities behind them.
A Familiar Opponent Returns
Florida and FAU have met four times before Saturday. The Gators won every previous matchup. However, the most recent meeting provided a reminder about FAU’s potential. Florida won 35-14 in Gainesville on Sept. 4, 2021. The Gators controlled most of that game before FAU scored twice late. Florida also won 20-14 in overtime during the 2015 meeting. The other victories came in 2007 and 2011. Florida won those games by scores of 59-20 and 41-3. Saturday’s matchup therefore gives FAU another chance to challenge Florida. The Owls also know this environment well.
The Biggest Matchup
The biggest matchup could come down to Florida’s defense against Veltkamp. Florida needs to disrupt FAU’s timing early. Veltkamp showed tremendous efficiency throughout last season. However, his 17 interceptions provide Florida with an obvious target. The Gators should also challenge Messer whenever possible. He produced more than 1,000 receiving yards last season. Florida’s secondary must communicate well against FAU’s passing concepts. Meanwhile, Philo faces his own challenge on the other side. FAU knows Florida will want to establish its new offense early. The Owls will likely test Philo with pressure and disguised coverage. If Philo handles those situations, Florida could control the game.
What Florida Must Prove
This opener provides more than an opportunity to start 1-0. Florida needs to establish an identity under Sumrall. The Gators must protect the football and avoid unnecessary penalties. They also need to generate pressure against Veltkamp. Offensively, Florida needs to make life easier for Philo. That means establishing the running game and creating manageable passing situations. Florida also needs explosive plays from Singleton and Brown. If those pieces come together, the Gators should have enough talent to control the matchup. Still, FAU has enough offensive firepower to create problems. The Owls return 54 players from last season. That continuity could prove valuable early in the year.
A Meaningful First Test
Florida should enter Saturday as the favorite. Yet this game carries legitimate importance for the Gators. A strong opening performance could immediately build confidence around Sumrall’s program. A sloppy performance would create questions before SEC play even begins. The schedule becomes much tougher quickly. Florida visits Auburn on Sept. 19 after hosting Campbell the following week. Therefore, the Gators need to use this opener wisely. Florida has already beaten FAU four times. However, past success means little once Saturday arrives. A new coach, new quarterback and new system create a different challenge. For Florida, the 2026 season begins with one simple objective. Start the Sumrall era with a convincing win in The Swamp.
This will be a good test for the new Florida Gators, but I think they have enough to beat the FAU Owls.
