CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — History was written under the Thursday night lights in Montgomery County, TN. In a high-octane battle that tested every ounce of grit, character, and execution, the Kirkwood High School Cobras pulled off the definitive victory of their program’s young existence, dethroning perennial state powerhouse Henry County 31-28 to secure their first-ever Region 7-5A championship. Cinderella decided she didn’t just want to go the dance; she wanted to own the dance. Now, the Cobras are champions.
For head coach Chad Watson and the Cobras, the path to this historic moment was forged long before kickoff. Exactly eleven months ago, following a heart-wrenching 42-39 regular-season finale loss to Henry County that cost them the region crown a year prior, Watson and his squad set a singular benchmark.
Fast forward to Thursday night: Kirkwood (9-1, 5-0 Region 7-5A) officially checked off the first major milestone of their three-part postseason roadmap.
The Duel: Reding and the Air Attack Lead the Charge
From the opening drive, the atmosphere in Clarksville was electric. Standing in the way of Kirkwood’s championship dream was a Henry County program built on decades of physical line play and playoff dominance. However, Kirkwood senior quarterback Miles Reding proved once again why he is one of the premier dual-threat signal-callers in Middle Tennessee.
Reding orchestrated the offense with surgical precision throughout the night. Moving seamlessly inside and outside the pocket, Reding consistently extended plays, slicing through the Patriots’ defense and converting crucial third-down opportunities.
His primary safety valve and biggest game-changer was star tight end Parker Keenan. Matching up against Henry County’s physical linebacker corps, Keenan routinely found soft spots in coverage down the seam. Whether going up for contest-catches over the middle or churning out yards after contact down the sideline, Keenan’s explosive grabs in key late-game moments kept the chains moving and the Patriots on their heels.
Complementing the air raid, defensive back and dynamic athlete Elijah Hird delivered clutch two-way play, stabilizing the field position battles when the momentum threatened to swing back to Paris, Tennessee.

Record Impact: Kirkwood (9-1, 5-0) | Henry County (5-5, 4-1)
Location: Kirkwood High School, Clarksville, TN

Game-Breaking Moment: Standing Tall Down the Stretch
With the contest hanging in the balance at 31-28 in the fourth quarter, Henry County mounted a methodical drive aiming to snatch victory from the home side once again.
Yet, when the pressure reached its absolute peak, Kirkwood’s front seven held the line. After the Cobras’ offense chewed up critical clock with a series of hard-nosed runs by Reding and tactical screen passes, the defense stepped up to force a decisive turnover on downs in the closing minutes, sealing the 31-28 victory.
The final whistle unleashed a sea of celebration as students, parents, and community members flooded the turf to celebrate a moment that solidified Kirkwood High School on the TSSAA high school football map.
Looking Ahead to the TSSAA State Playoffs
Winning a region title isn’t just a trophy on a wall; it grants Kirkwood crucial home-field advantage heading into the opening rounds of the TSSAA Class 5A state playoffs.
Having taken down the district standard-bearer that haunted them a year ago, Coach Watson’s Cobras enter November with massive momentum, elite quarterback play, and a town standing shoulder-to-shoulder behind them.
What started as a newborn high school athletic program just a few short seasons ago has transformed into a regional champion—and the Cobras are nowhere near done yet.
