The Florida Gators return to The Swamp for their second game of 2026. Florida welcomes the Campbell Fighting Camels on Saturday evening. The matchup gives the Gators another chance to build momentum under Jon Sumrall. Florida enters the game with a 1-0 record. The Gators opened the season with a 66-21 victory over Florida Atlantic. Campbell enters at 2-0 after beating East Tennessee State and Western Carolina. The game kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Eastern at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. SEC Network+ will carry the matchup nationally. This contest also marks Campbell’s first game against an SEC opponent.
A First-Ever Meeting
Florida and Campbell have never met on the football field. Therefore, Saturday will create the first chapter of their series. The Gators announced the matchup as part of their 2026 schedule. Campbell also enters unfamiliar territory. The Fighting Camels have never faced an SEC program before this weekend. That makes the trip to Gainesville a significant moment for the program. Florida has plenty of experience against FCS opponents. The Gators own a 26-1 record against FCS teams and lower-level opponents. Georgia Southern handed Florida its only loss against that group in 2013. However, Florida cannot overlook Campbell’s current form. The Camels have already shown plenty of confidence this season. They also bring an offense that can create explosive plays.
Florida’s New Era Starts Fast
Sumrall began his Florida tenure with an impressive offensive performance. The Gators produced 624 total yards against Florida Atlantic. They also scored 66 points in the victory. Quarterback Aaron Philo led the passing attack with 275 yards. He also threw three touchdown passes against the Owls. Meanwhile, running back Jadan Baugh rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns. Baugh showed why Florida expects big things from him. He carried the ball only 14 times against FAU. Still, he broke off a 61-yard run during the performance. Furthermore, Florida’s defense created several key moments. The Gators forced two turnovers against FAU. They also stopped the Owls three times on fourth down. Still, Sumrall wants more from his defense. Florida allowed 396 yards and 25 first downs against FAU. Campbell could test the Gators with another challenging offensive attack.
Campbell Comes in Confident
The Camels enter Gainesville with a perfect 2-0 record. The Camels opened the season with a 49-37 victory over East Tennessee State. They followed that win with a 28-19 victory over No. 24 Western Carolina. The Western Carolina victory showed Campbell’s physical potential. The Camels produced 528 total yards in the win. They also held Western Carolina to just one rushing yard. Quarterback Kamden Sixkiller played a major role in that victory. He completed 29 of 44 passes for 330 yards. Sixkiller also threw two touchdown passes and added another rushing score. However, he also threw three interceptions.
Florida will likely attack that part of Campbell’s game. The Gators have the athletes to create pressure and force mistakes. Campbell head coach Braxton Harris enters his third season. His team returned six offensive starters and four defensive starters. The Camels also brought in 62 newcomers this season. That roster turnover creates an interesting challenge. Campbell has blended newcomers with returning contributors quickly. The early results have certainly caught attention.
What Florida Must Do
Florida should establish its running game early. Baugh gives the Gators a powerful option in the backfield. His ability to create explosive runs could change this game quickly. The Gators also need another efficient performance from Philo. His ability to stretch the field creates opportunities for Florida’s receivers. However, the offense cannot become careless with the football. Defensively, Florida must contain Sixkiller. Campbell averages more than 500 yards through its first two games. That production makes this matchup more interesting than the records suggest. Florida also needs better communication in the secondary. FAU found several openings through the passing game. Campbell could attack those same areas if Florida loses focus. Meanwhile, Campbell needs to survive Florida’s athleticism. The Camels cannot afford repeated penalties or turnovers. They also need to keep the game close early.
A Test Before SEC Play
This game serves as Florida’s final tune-up before conference play begins. The Gators travel to Auburn on September 19. Therefore, Saturday provides one final opportunity to clean up mistakes. Campbell will have different goals. The Camels want to prove they can compete against an SEC opponent. A strong performance could provide major momentum for their CAA schedule. Florida enters as the clear favorite. Still, Campbell has already shown enough to demand respect. The Camels have scored 49 and 28 points in their first two games. Ultimately, Florida’s talent should create significant advantages.
Yet the Gators must play with discipline from the opening whistle. There is no rivalry history between these teams yet. Instead, Saturday creates something new for both programs. Florida wants another dominant performance under Sumrall. Campbell wants to make its first SEC appearance memorable. The first meeting between the Gators and Fighting Camels should offer plenty of intrigue. More importantly, it could reveal how prepared Florida looks for SEC competition.
The Florida Gators will be tested by the Fighting Camels, but they are at home so the Gators should come out on top.
