ANN ARBOR, Mich. — On an unforgettable opening night at the Crisler Center, the No. 5 Michigan Wolverines women’s basketball team pulled off the highest-ranked victory in program history, knocking off the No. 2 UConn Huskies 77-66.
Behind a spectacular career night from junior guard Te’Yala Delfosse and a clutch fourth-quarter defensive effort, Kim Barnes Arico’s squad brought an end to UConn’s staggering 39-game regular-season winning streak. The victory sends a thunderous message across the women’s college basketball landscape: the gap at the pinnacle of the sport is closing, and the Huskies are far from invincible.
Delfosse and Olson Deliver Master Performance
Despite playing without starting point guard Mila Holloway—who remains sidelined indefinitely with a left leg injury—Michigan’s backcourt played with fearless confidence from the opening tip.
Junior guard Te’Yala Delfosse delivered a career-high performance, dropping 22 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Delfosse shot 8-of-13 from the field and connected on 4-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc. Complementing Delfosse was standout junior Olivia Olson, who put together a stat-sheet-stuffing performance with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals in 37 minutes of work.
Stanford transfer Courtney Ogden added 12 points in her Michigan debut, while sophomore star Syla Swords chipped in 10 points and five rebounds to give the Wolverines four scorers in double figures.
UConn, on the other hand, struggled to establish offensive fluidity outside of star freshman guard Jovana Popovic, who delivered an efficient 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting alongside seven rebounds. Reigning AP National Player of the Year Sarah Strong was hampered by early foul trouble, going scoreless in the first half after picking up three quick fouls. Though Strong rallied to finish with 13 points and eight rebounds, she eventually fouled out in the final minutes.

The Game-Breaking Moment: The Fourth-Quarter Blitz
With the game hanging in the balance entering the fourth quarter, Michigan executed a game-breaking 22-13 surge over the final ten minutes.
The defining sequence occurred with five minutes remaining. Trailing by two, Olson intercepted a pass on the perimeter and executed a fast-break layup, drawing a foul for a three-point play. On the ensuing possession, Delfosse drilled a contested corner three-pointer to cap off an 8-0 Michigan run, extending the lead to nine points.
Michigan’s defense harassed Geno Auriemma’s squad into 19 total turnovers, converting those mistakes into 19 points while holding UConn to 26% shooting from three-point range (5-of-19) and a dismal 57% mark from the free-throw line.
What the Upset Means for UConn and WBB
For Michigan, this marquee victory positions the Wolverines as legitimate national championship contenders. Proving they can knock off a blue-blood program even while shorthanded demonstrates rare depth and resilience.
For UConn, the loss exposes immediate vulnerabilities early in the 2026-27 campaign. Auriemma’s team showed a lack of backcourt composure under heavy pressure and struggled to adapt when Strong faced foul trouble. With a grueling non-conference schedule ahead—including upcoming battles against No. 10 Iowa and No. 1 South Carolina—the Huskies must solve their turnover and free-throw woes quickly if they plan to maintain their top-tier standing.
