The Frontier League is back in action for its 32nd season. The Washington Wild Things look to improve on their best season to date by winning their first Frontier League Championship in Washington. However, the league has expanded again, increasing the competition for a championship.
The action kicked off this month with the addition of two new teams. This season, the league added the expansion teams of the Down East Bird Dogs, located in Kinston, North Carolina, and the Mississippi Mud Monsters, playing out of Jackson. The Wild Things will host both of these teams for the first time in August.
The Wild Things kicked off their season May 9th on the road against the Windy City Thunderbolts. Despite a hard-fought effort, the Thunderbolts pulled off a 9-8 win in game one. Washington lost the series in game two as Windy City shut out Washington with a 4-0 win. However, the Wild Things avoided the sweep, managing a convincing 10-2 victory.
For the first home stand, Washington hosted the Ottawa Titans. At the newly renamed EQT Park, Wild Thing fans were thrilled. As Washington managed to sweep the Titans with a 3-2 win, a 4-2 win, and a 10-6 victory.
Washington moved onto the road versus their division rival, the Florence Y’alls. Washington fell in game one, losing 10-7. However, Washington came back and won the series with an 8-4 win, followed by a dominant 19-9 victory.
Up 6-3, Washington traveled to Illinois to face the Joliet Slammers. A rematch of the 2018 championship game began with a 3-2 win for Joliet. In game two, the Wild Things went off, scoring 13 for a 13-2 victory. The Jailbirds took the series in game three, shutting out Washington 3-0.

Washington returned home to host the Y’alls for a second series. Much like last time, Florence took game one 3-2. But the Wild Things took the series, winning two straight. The first came close with a final score of 2-1. While the second match was an offensive showdown, with Washington coming out on top 9-7.
Back on the road, the Wild Things met the Central Division leader, the Lake Erie Crushers. Washington fell in game one, losing 10-8. Game two ended in dramatic fashion. The game went into overtime when Washington blew a 4-3 lead in the ninth. In inning ten, Washington scored two, making the game 6-4. However, Washington blew another lead as Erie tied the game 6-6.
In the 11th inning, the game went into sudden death. Unique to the Frontier League, sudden death occurs in the 11th inning to end the game. The home team elects to either hit or pitch, which Erie chose to hit. With a man on first, Erie received three tries to score a run. If Erie could not score, Washington would win. Washington recorded three outs, resulting in the overtime sudden-death victory.
In the following game, Washington scored a clean win over Erie, outscoring the Crushers 6-5. The final series of the month came against the Schaumburg Boomers at home. Saturday turned into a doubleheader when Friday’s game was rained out. The Wild Things split the day, getting shutout in the first 6-0 but winning the night game 9-2. However, Schaumburg had the last laugh as they took the series, winning 8-4 on Sunday, June 1st.
Currently, the Wild Things are 12-9 and are in second place in their division to the Crushers. In June, their schedule is made up exclusively of Midwestern Conference matchups, as in July, they’ll start to face the Atlantic Conference.
