After a tense 24 hours of scoreboard watching, Team USA has officially punched its ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. While the Americans suffered a stunning 8–6 loss to Italy on Tuesday night, they “stayed alive” thanks to Italy’s dominant 9–1 victory over Mexico on Wednesday, March 11.
The results leave Team USA (3–1) as the runner-up in Pool B, trailing the undefeated Italians (4–0).
The “Italian Favor”: Pasquantino’s Historic Night
Following the U.S. loss on Tuesday, the Americans were no longer in control of their own destiny. They needed Italy to defeat Mexico on Wednesday to avoid a messy three-way tiebreaker that could have seen them eliminated.
Italy did more than just win; they left no doubt.
- The “Pasquantino” Show: Italy captain Vinnie Pasquantino delivered the first three-home run game in WBC history, a “hat-trick” of solo shots that silenced the Mexican crowd in Houston.
- The Clincher: With the 9–1 win, Italy secured the top seed in Pool B. As Pasquantino joked after the game: “You’re welcome, USA. We were thinking of you guys over at your hotel.”
Recap: How the USA Put Themselves in Jeopardy
The U.S. began Wednesday in a state of “spectator anxiety” because of their lackluster performance against Italy the night prior.
- Early Deficit: U.S. starter Nolan McLean struggled early, surrendering home runs to Kyle Teel and Sam Antonacci. By the sixth inning, a combination of errors and wild pitches saw the Americans trailing 8–0.
- The Late Surge: Pete Crow-Armstrong attempted to save the day, launching two home runs (including a massive three-run shot) to bring the U.S. within two.
- The Final Strike: The rally famously died in the bottom of the ninth when Aaron Judge struck out with a runner on, sealing the upset.
