Coming from obscurity into the limelight. You know the narrative.
Caitlin Clark got her hoops going in Iowa which is states away from the mecca of women’s college basketball.
Nicola Jokic grew up in Serbia, some country far from here that doesn’t reverberate with shouts of “basketball superstar.”
Jayden Daniels started his college football career at Arizona State – hardly football’s heartland – and is now on the verge of beating the Detroit Lions in the playoffs on his way to one of the greatest rookie quarterback seasons in NFL history.
Then there’s the inimitable Sammy Sportface, the ultimate from nowhere to somewhere storyline all Americans gravitate toward. From humble beginnings in suburban Maryland to title losses to St. Paul & Augustine in both sixth and eighth grade, to bad grades on college English papers, to an AI job insecurity obsession, to writing about Rudy’s childhood maladies, to ding donging Leasure, to sports blogger.
Out of nowhere all four of these characters have emerged to disrupt their industries in ways never seen before.
All four unique. All four determined. All four unthinkably remarkable.
Unconventional story arcs culminate at standout positions in their respective professions.
But you already knew all this.
What you don’t know is that all four have secret Sportface tattoos. Caitlin’s is on her shoulder; the other three guys have them on their butt cheeks; Sportface has two, one on each cheek. The tattoo is the image of Sportface with the numbers 11 and 55 on his Wake Forest #11 football jersey. You’ve been admiring the image since you joined this candle-lighting blog from outer space.
Think of this as a secret society of sorts; some kind of curious cult. They only reveal their tattoos while reading Sportface blogs, which means Jokic and Daniels have to be in their bedrooms or bathroom stalls.
Sportface doesn’t follow the rules. He reads his blogs and then texts them to friends who don’t want them.
Sportface has always been big on long and original acronyms that others would never consider or associate themselves with. He calls the Baby Boomer Brotherhood the BBB to little avail. Today he’s introducing this quartet’s memorable acronym: SSCCNJJD. Stands for Sammy Sportface Caitlin Clark Nikola Jokic Jayden Daniels fan club. All members of the BBB can sign up for the SSCCNJJD or not bother.
Sammy Sportface is the executive director, lead foreman, and thought leader of the SSCCNJJC.
“SSCCNJJD is the next iteration of the BBB,” said Sportface. “CC, NJ, and JD have been carrying Sportface to new levels and I feel they need to be part of this BBB movement which needs a branding refresh. Without them, this blog has nothing to offer.”
He said there will be free T-Shirts of the SSCCNJJD available at Dick’s Sporting Goods. Supplies are unlimited.
“I feel the unconventional and high improbability of success of three great athletes is consistent with the story arc of Sammy Sportface,” added Sportface. “Nobody knew who they were. They had little chance of becoming famous. Yet they pulled it off through sheer determination and belief in themselves. I owe the meteoric escalation of Sammy Sportface to these three athletes. Without them all this is is the BBB. By their ascents to greatness from nowheresvilles, they transmogrified the BBB into what is now the SSCCNJJD. This unconventional, unfathomable acronym goes viral on Instagram today and becomes a household string of litters that everybody can’t stop saying to each other. Phenomenons like this aren’t explainable. All we have to do is be in awe of them.”
There’s a sign-up sheet for the T-shirts here.
