The previous week in MLB was about a starting pitcher in the American League being placed on the injured list due to a shoulder injury, an outfielder in the AL lands on the injured list due to a hamstring injury, and an infielder in the National League is dealing with a strained hamstring.
Boston Red Sox Place Starting Pitcher Chris Sale on Injured List with Shoulder Inflammation
The Boston Red Sox placed starting pitcher Chris Sale on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, per a team announcement. Due to the injury, Sale was forced to exit his last start against the Cincinnati Reds early. He is expected to miss at least one start and be out longer. The starting pitcher underwent an MRI and CT scan several days ago and is set to have more tests, per Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. Sale is optimistic that he does not require surgery, and rest will fix the problem with his shoulder.
The injury to Sale is crushing as it seemed he was on his way to pitching for an entire season since having Tommy John surgery in 2020. Sale has posted a 4.58 ERA in 59 innings pitched this year (11 starts) with 71 strikeouts, 15 walks allowed, eight home runs yielded, a 100 ERA+, 3.71 FIP, and a 1.18 WHIP. He has made just 11 starts over the last two seasons, dealing with rib and finger injuries last season after completing his elbow rehab. Sale has been through plenty of injuries in his career, and hopefully, he can return this season.
New York Yankees Place Outfielder Harrison Bader on IL with Hamstring Injury
The New York Yankees have placed outfielder Harrison Bader on the injured list with a right hamstring strain, per a team announcement. Bader suffered the injury in a contest last week against the Seattle Mariners while trying to get an infield single. He underwent an MRI, and the Yankees decided to put him on the IL. The hamstring strain is “low grade,” he will be out at least a couple of weeks, said manager Aaron Boone, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
The loss of Bader is a blow to the club as he was having a productive 2023 MLB season. The outfielder compiled a .267 batting average and .806 OPS in 26 games with 14 runs scored, two triples, six home runs, 19 RBIs, six stolen bases, and a 118 OPS+. The Yankees will probably take a cautious approach with the hamstring injury to Bader. This type of injury can linger on if not treated properly.
Philadelphia Phillies Place Infielder Alec Bohm on IL with Strained Hamstring
Per a team announcement, the Philadelphia Phillies have placed infielder Alec Bohm on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. Bohm has been a bright spot for a Phillies club that has struggled this season, as they are currently in fourth place in the National League East. Bohm has posted a .265 average and .724 OPS in 53 games with 23 runs scored, nine doubles, six home runs, two stolen bases, and leads the club with 37 RBIs.
