The last week in MLB was about a former player elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. A National League club has signed a player to a multi-year contract extension, and a team has signed their manager to an extension.

Scott Rolen Elected to Hall of Fame in Sixth Year of Eligibility

Scott Rolen has been elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his sixth year of eligibility by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, as he was on 76.3% of the ballots.

Rolen had a 17-year career with the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Toronto Blue Jays.

Rolen won the Gold Glove award at third base eight times and was known for making spectacular plays.

He was also a solid hitter, accumulating a lifetime .281 batting average and .855 OPS with 2,077 hits, 517 doubles, 43 triples, 316 home runs, 1,287 RBIs, 118 stolen bases, and 899 walks.

Rolen made fascinating history by being elected into Cooperstown.

Rolen’s 10.2% in his first year on the ballot is the lowest in a player’s debut, who was eventually selected into the Hall of Fame, per Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

He is only the 18th third baseman inducted into the Hall of Fame, the fewest of any position.

The 2023 induction ceremony is set to take place July 21-23 in Cooperstown, New York.

Rolen will join Fred McGriff, who the contemporary era committee unanimously selected in December.

Chicago Cubs radio broadcaster Pat Hughes will be honored as this year’s Ford C. Frick Award recipient.

New York Mets Sign Second Baseman Jeff McNeil to Four-Year Contract Extension

The New York Mets have signed second baseman Jeff McNeil to a four-year contract extension worth $50 million, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.

The extension includes a fifth-year club option that can increase the value to $63.75 million, notes Passan.

McNeil was great for the Mets last season as he was selected as an All-Star and led the National League in hitting with a .326 batting average in 148 games.

The infielder also posted a .836 OPS with 73 runs scored, 39 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 62 RBIs, and four stolen bases.

In five seasons with the Mets, McNeil has proven to be a stellar hitter for the team.

He has posted a batting average of over .300 in four of the five years with the team.

As owner Steve Cohen has opened his checkbook, the McNeil extension continues a busy offseason for the Mets.

Before the agreement with McNeil, Cohen’s payroll was approximately $364 million, which blows past the highest competitive balance tax threshold.

Atlanta Braves Sign Manager Brian Snitker to Extension through 2025

The Atlanta Braves have signed manager Brian Snitker to a contract extension that continues through 2025, per a team announcement.

Snitker has exceeded expectations since he took over in 2016.

He has guided the club to win the National League East division for five straight years, along with capturing the World Series title in 2021.

He was named the NL Manager of the Year in 2018 and has received votes for the award in each of the last four years.
