For the longest time, there has been a problem around the world and that is mental health. We have so many innocent people killed in school, movie theaters, and club shootings. The pandemic in 2020 made it worse for many. The reason is that people were stuck inside or kept from the places where they can go to release their stress. That also means that people will commit suicide which is never a good thing. This has happened to everyday people and athletes. Some people are afraid to ask for help. No matter what sex an individual is, whether they are female or male, help is available. It seems that males have a problem with asking for help because in their minds it makes them soft. A guy is supposed to be masculine, not cry, or show emotions. But that is the wrong mindset.
It was a sad moment to see UFC fighter Paddy Pimblett after he won his fight when he said, “Please speak to someone.” The reason he mentioned it was that he lost a male friend to suicide. The quote that hit me the hardest is that “He would rather have his mate cry on his shoulder than have to attend his funeral next week.” The suicide happened while Pimblett was weighing in for his UFC match. He is undefeated in the UFC. Pimblett also stated, “So please, let’s get rid of the stigma and men start talking.” What he meant is that men need to talk and get help and I agree with him. I would rather see any of my friends male or female cry on my shoulder than lose them. I know as a male, sometimes it’s hard to ask for help.
Men need to stop and say I am not a pussy for asking for help. Also, crying and showing emotion is not a bad thing. The ones who label men are the ones who need to look in the mirror. We do not like it when people do not ask for help when needed. I had a moment that many people face in their lives when I lost my mother. I am not going to admit that I thought about suicide but with the help of friends and family, those thoughts went away. Still, to this day, I have friends and family that continue to help me. I am not sure why Pimblett’s friend committed suicide but like he said he would rather help than lose him. We need to go and get help before we cause our loved ones to mourn us being gone.
We need to all come together and help each other with mental health. It is a problem that will continue until it is an issue that the government finally addresses. There should be programs in place that could help with mental health. I am not saying that all suicides will be prevented. The government needs to help its citizens avoid future shootings or bombings that kill innocent people. It was different to see it come up during a UFC event. I also do not understand why our troops, the ones who fight for our freedoms and who suffer from mental health issues, cannot get help. Let us go and get the help that we need even though I know that we are not going to save everyone. If you need help, please seek it so that we all can enjoy each other’s time for the foreseeable future.
