Went for a bike ride this morning at the beach. Felt the wind cool my perspiring face. Looked around and saw lush green grass, motorboats in a marina, and gorgeous, sprawling beach houses where families get together. Is there anything more enthralling than a fabulous beach house?
The beach isn’t a competitive place like so many aspects of our lives. There are no bosses pressuring you to untwist intellectual knots – so they don’t have to.
There are no subways packed with people. There are no six-lane highways with bumper-to-bumper traffic. The hustle of life gets set aside at the beach.
There are quiet streets. There is blowing wind. There is warm sun. There are bike riders, joggers, boardwalks, pickleball courts and pickleball games, places to sit and talk over a cup of coffee, and little stores selling newspapers, flip flops, beach shovels, and candy.
At the beach, you can always count on entire shops that sell nothing but candy: classic fudge, fudge with walnuts, white chocolate, red and black licorice, chocolate-covered pretzels, mint chocolate bark, and 75 other choices.
I’m describing Candy Kitchen, of course. You’ve been there. If Heaven is a Candy Kitchen, I’m down with that.
Beaches calm us. They remind us not all is a rat race, that not everything is a competitive duel, and that we are not here just to do Darwinism.
The beach is not survival of the fittest. It’s everybody survives no matter how fit you are. We’re supportive of each other more at the beach. We celebrate you winning a stuffed animal playing ski ball and ordering the double-decker ice cream cone – after gobbling juicy pizza.
The beach reminds us that life has a bigger purpose. The sand and ocean are here for us to explore and wonder about. Every year the beach looks the same as the year before. There’s assurance and predictability. In a world of constant change, the ocean and sand are outliers. We can trust them to stay the way they are, forever.
