As we get ready for another NFL season there will be a new name for one of the franchises. Last year the Washington Football Team was renamed after their former name the Redskins was deemed racist and removed from the team name. This comes after team majority owner Daniel Snyder said he would never change the name. It only happened when it was going to hit him in his pocket if he did not change the name. In the end, he would lose over six billion dollars in revenue from sponsors. It was announced that earlier this week that the Washington Football Team was sending a survey to its season ticket holders to choose a new team name. It will be interesting to see what the fans chose. As a sports writer and podcaster, it was at first weird to say Football Team instead of Redskins. It grew on all of us.
The survey has 30 names on it. Team president Jason Wright said that the Washington Football Team was going to stay the same until the 2022-23 season. Some fans have said that maybe the name is good as it is. Wright and the front office have changed their minds. Some of the more popular names are good and some not so good. The preferred names are as follows: the Monarchs, Presidents, Wild Hogs, Riders, Redwolves, Aviators, Wayfarers, and Ambassadors. The one that sticks out to me is the Wild Hogs seeing that many fans wear pig masks in the stands at the games. The Presidents would also be one that could be used. At this point, they could use different presidents as mascots. The fans are going to be able to choose and I think that is cool that they are involved. Especially with the way the franchise has been.
I have also seen the Redwolves or Redhawks. This would also work because of the colors of the uniforms and helmets. As we all know, they are burgundy and gold. These logos would look good on the Washington Football Team helmet. The Warriors, Pilots, and Commanders would also fit. I am wondering if whatever name is chosen by the fans if Snyder will approve it. He already has bought out many of the minority owners so they cannot make him sell the team. Many fans, both who like the team and the ones that do not, believe the team should be sold. The way that the organization has been run under him has not been great. There is still an ongoing sexual harassment lawsuit by many former employees against Snyder. Let’s see how this lawsuit turns out and what kind of impact it will have on the future.
In the end, the name may stay the Washington Football Team. Either way, I think this will be a good and positive thing for football in the nation’s capital. I am not sure if Daniel Snyder is going anywhere anytime soon no matter what the fans think should be the new name. To me, I like Wild Hogs, Redwolves, or Presidents. Too bad they cannot use Nationals because the baseball team already took the name. They could also use Senators as that was the former name before they became the Nationals. This will be cool to see what the name will be for the Washington Football Team.
