The Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to Soldier Field for a challenging Sunday Night Football matchup against the Chicago Bears. Both teams enter Week 9 with momentum, but their records tell different stories. Tampa Bay enters Sunday’s contest at 3-5, while Chicago sits at 6-2. However, the Buccaneers have won two consecutive games and remain firmly in the NFC South race. Meanwhile, Chicago has won three straight games and continues pushing toward the top of the NFC North.
The matchup takes place Sunday, November 8, 2026, with kickoff scheduled for 8:20 p.m. Eastern on NBC. Both teams feature productive rushing attacks and defenses capable of dominating opponents. However, the quarterback matchup between Baker Mayfield and Caleb Williams could ultimately decide the outcome. This contest also gives Tampa Bay an opportunity to prove its recent turnaround can continue against stronger competition.
Buccaneers Enter Chicago with Momentum
Tampa Bay enters the matchup following an unusual 16-0 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The Buccaneers accomplished something the NFL had not witnessed in more than five decades. They won without completing a single pass. Heavy rainfall forced Tampa Bay to rely almost entirely on its rushing attack. The Buccaneers responded with a franchise-record 324 rushing yards. Running back Bucky Irving led the charge with 170 rushing yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, Kenneth Gainwell contributed another 140 yards. The performance demonstrated Tampa Bay’s ability to control games without relying on its passing attack.
Additionally, the Buccaneers’ defense intercepted Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. four times. Those takeaways helped Tampa Bay record its first shutout victory of the season. However, Chicago presents a much different challenge than Atlanta. The Bears feature an explosive offense and a defense that continues improving. Tampa Bay must deliver another complete performance to extend its winning streak.
Baker Mayfield Must Lead Tampa Bay’s Offense
Quarterback Baker Mayfield remains one of Tampa Bay’s most important players. Mayfield recently returned after missing three games because of a dislocated right thumb. However, the Buccaneers have attempted only 14 passes during their last two contests. That approach helped Tampa Bay secure victories, but Chicago could force a different offensive strategy. The Bears possess enough offensive firepower to create an early lead. Therefore, Mayfield must prepare to attack through the air. Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka could become an important factor if he returns from his foot injury. His ability to create separation would give Mayfield another dangerous receiving option.
However, Tampa Bay must monitor Egbuka’s availability throughout the week. Meanwhile, Irving and Gainwell must continue producing on the ground. The Buccaneers currently lead the NFL with 168.6 rushing yards per game. Their offensive line deserves considerable credit for creating running lanes and controlling opposing defensive fronts. Center Graham Barton faces a particularly difficult challenge against Chicago defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. If Barton and his teammates win that matchup, Tampa Bay could establish another productive rushing performance.
Caleb Williams Powers Chicago’s Offense
The Bears have developed an explosive offensive attack behind quarterback Caleb Williams. Williams has performed exceptionally well since returning from injury. Chicago has scored at least 30 points in each of his three games since returning. Additionally, Williams has thrown four touchdown passes without an interception during that stretch. His ability to extend plays creates difficult assignments for opposing defenses. Chicago defeated the Seattle Seahawks 34-17 in its previous contest. Williams completed an efficient performance with 247 passing yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, the Bears’ offense continues finding contributions from several talented playmakers.
Wide receiver Luther Burden III has emerged as Williams’ leading receiving target. Burden enters the matchup with 42 receptions, 547 receiving yards, and three touchdowns. His speed and acceleration create opportunities for explosive plays. Tight end Colston Loveland provides another reliable option. Loveland has recorded 33 receptions for 309 yards and two touchdowns this season. Additionally, running back D’Andre Swift gives Chicago a dangerous rushing weapon. Swift has scored 10 rushing touchdowns this season, including seven during his previous four games. The Buccaneers must account for every offensive weapon rather than concentrating exclusively on Williams.

Both Defenses Could Determine the Outcome
This matchup features two of the NFL’s strongest rushing defenses. Tampa Bay ranks second against the run, while Chicago ranks fourth. Additionally, the Buccaneers rank third in total defense and fifth in scoring defense. Head coach Todd Bowles has developed a defensive unit capable of creating turnovers. Linebacker Alex Anzalone recently recorded two interceptions against Atlanta. His coverage responsibilities become particularly important against Chicago’s talented tight ends. Meanwhile, cornerback Jacob Parrish faces a difficult assignment against Burden. Parrish leads the NFL with 13 passes defended entering the matchup.
His ability to limit explosive plays could help Tampa Bay contain Chicago’s passing attack. However, the Bears have their own defensive playmakers. Chicago recently acquired defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons from Tennessee. Simmons immediately strengthened Chicago’s defensive front. He recorded one sack, six tackles, and two tackles for loss against Seattle. Additionally, rookie safety Dillon Thieneman leads Chicago with 47 tackles. His versatility allows the Bears to challenge opponents against both the run and pass. Both defensive coordinators must find ways to disrupt opposing quarterbacks without surrendering explosive plays.
How the Buccaneers Can Win
Tampa Bay must establish its rushing attack immediately. Irving and Gainwell have combined for impressive performances during the team’s two-game winning streak. However, Chicago’s defensive front presents a more difficult challenge. The Buccaneers must create manageable third-down situations while controlling possession. Additionally, Mayfield must provide balance through the passing game. Chicago will likely concentrate on stopping Tampa Bay’s running backs. Therefore, Mayfield must capitalize when defenders crowd the line of scrimmage. Play-action passes could create opportunities for explosive gains. Defensively, Tampa Bay must pressure Williams without allowing him to escape the pocket. The Buccaneers have generated takeaways consistently throughout the season. Another multiple-turnover performance could provide the advantage Tampa Bay needs. Finally, the Buccaneers must avoid costly penalties and capitalize inside the red zone. Settling for field goals against Chicago’s explosive offense could become a significant problem.
How the Bears Can Win
Chicago must force Tampa Bay into uncomfortable offensive situations. First, the Bears should concentrate on limiting Irving and Gainwell. Stopping the rushing attack would force Mayfield to throw more frequently. That approach could allow Simmons and Chicago’s defensive front to generate pressure. Additionally, the Bears must protect Williams against Tampa Bay’s aggressive defense. Bowles frequently uses blitz packages to disrupt opposing quarterbacks. Chicago’s offensive line must recognize those pressures and create opportunities for quick completions. Burden and Loveland could become especially important against Tampa Bay’s coverage schemes. Meanwhile, Swift must help Chicago establish its own rushing attack. A productive ground game would prevent the Buccaneers from concentrating entirely on Williams. Furthermore, Chicago must avoid turnovers against a defense that thrives on interceptions. Finally, the Bears should take advantage of their home-field atmosphere. A fast start could force Tampa Bay away from its preferred rushing approach.
Final Prediction: Bears Survive Buccaneers’ Challenge
Tampa Bay enters this matchup playing its best football of the season. The Buccaneers have discovered an effective rushing combination with Irving and Gainwell. Additionally, their defense has become one of the league’s most dangerous units. However, Chicago presents several challenges Tampa Bay has not faced during its recent winning streak. Williams has developed excellent chemistry with his young receiving targets. Meanwhile, Chicago’s defense continues improving following the addition of Simmons. The Bears also have the advantage of playing at Soldier Field.
Tampa Bay should remain competitive if its rushing attack continues producing. However, the Buccaneers may struggle if Chicago establishes an early two-score advantage. Mayfield must deliver more through the air than Tampa Bay required during its previous two victories. Ultimately, Williams’ playmaking ability and Chicago’s balanced offense give the Bears a slight advantage. Expect a physical contest featuring productive rushing attacks, aggressive defenses, and several momentum-changing plays. The Buccaneers need a victory to strengthen their position in the NFC South race. Meanwhile, Chicago wants to continue its pursuit of the NFC North title. Sunday night’s matchup should reveal whether Tampa Bay’s recent turnaround can withstand one of the NFC’s strongest teams.
Final Score Prediction: Chicago Bears 27, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23.
