The Tampa Bay Buccaneers head to Charlotte on Sunday desperately needing a victory against the Carolina Panthers. However, this NFC South rivalry carries more significance than another regular-season matchup. Tampa Bay enters Sunday’s contest with a disappointing 1-5 record following another frustrating loss. Meanwhile, Carolina leads the division with a 3-2 record and hopes to strengthen its position. The Buccaneers have struggled offensively, while injuries have created additional challenges throughout the season. Furthermore, Carolina enters the matchup with confidence following a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Sunday’s game kicks off at 1 p.m. Eastern at Bank of America Stadium. FOX will broadcast the contest. For Tampa Bay, a victory could provide the momentum necessary to rescue its season. For Carolina, another divisional victory would strengthen its early advantage in the NFC South.
Buccaneers Desperately Need a Victory
Tampa Bay enters Sunday’s matchup following a heartbreaking overtime loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Buccaneers controlled much of the contest and carried a 16-3 lead into the fourth quarter. However, two fourth-quarter interceptions from quarterback Jalon Daniels helped Pittsburgh erase Tampa Bay’s advantage. The Steelers scored on four consecutive possessions and eventually grabbed a 19-16 lead. Nevertheless, kicker Chase McLaughlin connected on a 53-yard field goal to force overtime. Pittsburgh responded with a touchdown on its opening overtime possession and eventually secured the victory. Despite the disappointing result, Tampa Bay’s defense showed encouraging signs. The Buccaneers recorded five sacks, including two from emerging defensive standout David Walker. However, defensive success means little when offensive mistakes repeatedly give opponents additional opportunities. Tampa Bay must find consistency before its season slips completely out of reach.
Will Baker Mayfield Return Against Carolina?
Perhaps Tampa Bay’s biggest storyline involves quarterback Baker Mayfield and his potential return. Mayfield suffered a dislocated right thumb during Tampa Bay’s Week 3 loss against Minnesota. The injury has kept him out of the Buccaneers’ previous three games. Meanwhile, rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels has handled starting responsibilities during Mayfield’s absence. Daniels has completed 61.2 percent of his passes for 501 yards, three touchdowns, and five interceptions. However, his turnovers have created problems for an offense already struggling to score consistently. Head coach Todd Bowles expects Mayfield to practice Wednesday before determining his availability. Additionally, Tampa Bay plans to prepare both quarterbacks while monitoring Mayfield’s recovery. A healthy Mayfield could provide the offensive leadership Tampa Bay desperately needs. Nevertheless, the Buccaneers cannot rush their starting quarterback back before he can effectively protect the football. The team’s offensive approach could change considerably depending on who starts Sunday.
Panthers Look to Maintain NFC South Lead
Carolina enters Sunday’s contest following a 25-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Panthers improved to 3-2 and maintained their position atop the NFC South standings. Quarterback Bryce Young continues developing into a dangerous offensive weapon. Against Philadelphia, Young threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Furthermore, Carolina limited Philadelphia’s injury-depleted offense to just 222 total yards. Running back Chuba Hubbard also delivered an impressive performance. Hubbard rushed for 120 yards and scored a touchdown, helping Carolina control the contest. Through five games, Young has thrown 11 touchdowns against only two interceptions. He also averages 309.8 passing yards per game, highlighting Carolina’s improving passing attack. However, the Panthers cannot overlook a Tampa Bay defense capable of creating pressure. Carolina must establish its rushing attack and prevent the Buccaneers from disrupting Young’s rhythm.

Past Matchups: A Rivalry Full of Close Games
The Buccaneers and Panthers have developed one of the NFC South’s most competitive rivalries. Carolina holds a narrow 26-25 advantage across 51 previous meetings. However, Tampa Bay has enjoyed considerable success recently, winning 12 of the previous 15 matchups. The teams split their two meetings during the 2025 season. Carolina defeated Tampa Bay 23-20 on December 21, 2025, in Charlotte. That victory helped the Panthers strengthen their pursuit of the NFC South championship. However, Tampa Bay responded with a 16-14 victory on January 3, 2026.
Despite that result, Carolina eventually captured the division championship through a three-team tiebreaker. Previously, Tampa Bay swept both meetings during the 2024 season. The Buccaneers defeated Carolina 26-23 in overtime on December 1, 2024. Running back Bucky Irving produced 185 total yards during that memorable victory. Additionally, Chase McLaughlin connected on a crucial 51-yard field goal to help force overtime. Tampa Bay followed that victory with a dominant 48-14 win on December 29, 2024. The rivalry also produced an unusual international matchup during the 2019 season. Carolina defeated Tampa Bay 37-26 in London after forcing seven turnovers. These previous meetings demonstrate how quickly momentum can change between the division rivals.
Key Players Who Could Decide the Game
Tampa Bay needs strong performances from several important players. Running back Bucky Irving could play a significant role against Carolina’s defensive front. His explosive running ability gives the Buccaneers opportunities to establish offensive balance. Additionally, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka provides another important weapon in Tampa Bay’s passing attack. Defensively, David Walker enters the matchup following his impressive two-sack performance against Pittsburgh. Walker must help pressure Young and prevent Carolina’s quarterback from extending plays. Meanwhile, Carolina will rely heavily on Young and Hubbard. Young’s ability to stretch defenses could create opportunities against Tampa Bay’s secondary. Hubbard also presents a difficult challenge because of his physical running style. Furthermore, wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan gives Carolina another dangerous offensive option. Tampa Bay must prevent McMillan from producing explosive gains downfield. Ultimately, both teams need their offensive playmakers to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
Three Keys to Sunday’s Matchup
First, Tampa Bay must protect the football. Turnovers contributed significantly to Sunday’s overtime loss against Pittsburgh. Whether Mayfield or Daniels starts, the Buccaneers cannot afford unnecessary interceptions. Second, Tampa Bay must contain Carolina’s offensive weapons. Young has demonstrated his ability to produce explosive passing performances. However, Hubbard gives Carolina another way to attack opposing defenses. The Buccaneers must establish defensive discipline and force Carolina into difficult third-down situations. Finally, Tampa Bay needs an effective rushing attack. Irving could help control possession and reduce pressure on the quarterback. Additionally, sustained drives would help keep Carolina’s dangerous offense off the field. For the Panthers, forcing turnovers and controlling field position could provide a decisive advantage.
Final Thoughts: Can Tampa Bay Save Its Season?
Sunday’s matchup presents two NFC South rivals heading in different directions. Carolina enters with confidence, momentum, and an opportunity to strengthen its division lead. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay desperately needs a victory after losing five of its first six games. However, the Buccaneers still have all six divisional contests remaining on their schedule. That opportunity gives Tampa Bay a realistic path toward improving its position. Nevertheless, the Buccaneers must correct their offensive mistakes before expecting different results. Mayfield’s potential return could provide a significant boost, but his availability remains uncertain.
Carolina also possesses the offensive firepower to exploit Tampa Bay’s defensive weaknesses. Ultimately, the Panthers’ home-field advantage and offensive consistency could determine Sunday’s outcome. Prediction: Panthers 27, Buccaneers 20. Carolina appears better positioned entering the matchup, especially with Young playing confidently. However, a healthy Mayfield could make Sunday’s contest considerably more competitive. For Tampa Bay, the message remains simple: win now or risk watching another team control the NFC South race.
