The New England Patriots and Chicago Bears will meet Thursday night in one of Week 7’s most intriguing matchups. Both teams enter Thursday’s contest with identical 4-2 records and legitimate playoff aspirations. However, only one team can leave Soldier Field with its fifth victory. The Patriots arrive riding a three-game winning streak, while Chicago hopes to build momentum following Sunday’s victory over Atlanta. Thursday’s matchup also features two exciting young quarterbacks, Drake Maye and Caleb Williams. Both possess the talent to change games with their arms and mobility. Additionally, both defenses rank among the NFL’s top seven in yards allowed per game. The game kicks off Thursday, October 22, at 8:15 p.m. Eastern on Prime Video. Chicago will enjoy home-field advantage at Soldier Field. For both franchises, this matchup offers another opportunity to strengthen their postseason credentials.
Patriots Look to Extend Winning Streak
New England enters Thursday’s contest following a 26-19 victory over the New York Jets. That victory improved the Patriots to 4-2 and extended their winning streak to three games. Before defeating New York, New England beat Buffalo 29-26 and dominated Las Vegas 45-17. Those victories helped the Patriots recover from their disappointing 1-2 start. Meanwhile, quarterback Drake Maye has found his rhythm following some early struggles. Over his previous three games, Maye averaged approximately 293 passing yards. He also produced 10 touchdown passes against just one interception during that stretch.
Those numbers demonstrate how dangerous New England’s offense can become when Maye protects the football. However, Thursday presents a difficult challenge against Chicago’s talented defense. The Patriots average 374.2 total yards per game, ranking seventh across the NFL. Additionally, New England averages 130.7 rushing yards, giving its offense another dimension. Running backs Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson could play important roles against Chicago’s defensive front. The Patriots must establish their rushing attack and avoid becoming too dependent on Maye’s passing ability.
Bears Hope Home Field Makes the Difference
Chicago enters Thursday following an impressive 31-23 road victory over the Atlanta Falcons. The victory helped the Bears rebound from a disappointing 31-7 loss against Green Bay. More importantly, Caleb Williams returned from injury and delivered an impressive performance against Atlanta. Williams completed more than 83 percent of his passes and exceeded 300 passing yards. He also avoided turnovers, something Chicago desperately needs against New England’s opportunistic defense. Meanwhile, head coach Ben Johnson continues building an offense capable of challenging opposing defenses.
Chicago averages 388.3 total yards per game, ranking fifth in the league. The Bears also lead the NFL with 160.7 rushing yards per game. Running back D’Andre Swift gives Chicago an explosive option capable of producing significant gains. Furthermore, Chicago averages 25 points per contest, compared with New England’s 22.7. However, the Bears cannot afford another slow offensive performance against a Patriots team gaining confidence. Chicago must control the football, protect Williams, and finish drives with touchdowns instead of field goals.
Patriots Hold Historical Advantage
New England has enjoyed considerable success against Chicago throughout the teams’ history. The Patriots lead the regular-season series 11-4 and have won four consecutive road meetings against Chicago. Their most recent meeting occurred November 10, 2024, when New England defeated Chicago 19-3. The Patriots dominated defensively, recording nine sacks and limiting the Bears to just 142 total yards. Chicago also converted only one of its 14 third-down opportunities. However, Bears fans remember a much bigger victory in the rivalry.
Chicago demolished New England 46-10 in Super Bowl XX, capturing the franchise’s first Super Bowl championship. More recently, the Bears defeated the Patriots 33-14 during Monday Night Football in October 2022. Interestingly, New England also engineered a memorable comeback against Chicago in 2002. Tom Brady connected with David Patten for the winning touchdown during a dramatic 33-30 Patriots victory. Thursday offers Chicago another opportunity to reverse New England’s historical dominance.

Key Players Could Decide Thursday’s Contest
Drake Maye remains New England’s most important offensive player entering Thursday. He has thrown at least three touchdown passes in three consecutive games. Another three-touchdown performance would extend that streak to four games. Meanwhile, tight end Hunter Henry provides Maye with another dependable receiving option. Henry enters Thursday tied with Russ Francis for third among Patriots tight ends with 28 career touchdowns. Defensively, linebacker Elijah Ponder deserves attention following his impressive start.
Ponder leads New England with 5.5 sacks and has recorded at least half a sack in five consecutive games. Chicago must account for his pass-rushing ability throughout Thursday’s matchup. For the Bears, Williams and Swift represent two major offensive threats. Additionally, defensive back Kyler Gordon could influence the outcome after recording three sacks against Atlanta. His ability to disrupt passing plays could create problems for Maye.
Injuries Could Become a Major Factor
Both teams face injury concerns entering Thursday’s shortened preparation period. New England listed offensive linemen Ben Brown and Alijah Vera-Tucker among Monday’s nonparticipants. Cornerback Carlton Davis III also missed Monday’s walkthrough because of a neck injury. Meanwhile, wide receiver A.J. Brown participated on a limited basis because of an ankle issue. However, Maye participated fully despite appearing on the report with a right shoulder issue. Chicago also faces several important injury concerns. Linebacker T.J. Edwards and running back Kyle Monangai did not participate in Monday’s estimated practice. Offensive lineman Jonah Jackson also appeared among Chicago’s nonparticipants. These developments could influence both teams’ offensive strategies. However, Monday’s participation reports do not establish Thursday’s final player availability.
Three Keys to Victory
First, New England must contain Chicago’s rushing attack. The Bears lead the league in rushing yards per game, making defensive discipline essential. Second, Chicago must pressure Maye without allowing explosive passing plays. Maye’s recent performances demonstrate his ability to punish defenses that surrender opportunities downfield. Finally, turnovers could determine the outcome. New England enters Thursday with a minus-six turnover differential, compared with Chicago’s minus-two. Both teams possess enough offensive talent to capitalize on mistakes. Therefore, protecting the football becomes especially important during a potentially competitive matchup.
Final Thoughts: Who Wins Thursday Night?
Thursday’s contest presents two teams with similar records, strong defenses, and improving offenses. New England enters with momentum, confidence, and an impressive historical advantage. However, Chicago owns home-field advantage and the NFL’s leading rushing attack. The matchup between Maye and Williams should provide plenty of excitement. Ultimately, whichever defense creates more pressure and forces more mistakes could decide the outcome. Prediction: Bears 27, Patriots 24. Chicago’s rushing attack and home-field advantage give the Bears a narrow edge. However, Maye’s recent performances suggest New England could easily leave Soldier Field victorious. Either way, Thursday Night Football offers an important early-season test for two postseason contenders.
