The USF Bulls entered Friday night hoping to strengthen their American Conference championship hopes. Instead, East Carolina delivered a frustrating 20-17 defeat at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina. Head coach Brian Hartline watched his Bulls battle the Pirates in a competitive conference matchup. However, East Carolina ultimately emerged victorious, handing USF its third loss of the season. The Bulls entered the contest with a 6-2 record and two conference losses. Meanwhile, East Carolina entered at 4-4, looking to improve its position in the American Conference standings. Both programs understood the importance of this November matchup.
USF needed another victory to remain competitive in the conference championship race. The game also featured an interesting coaching storyline. USF defensive coordinator Josh Aldridge returned to East Carolina after previously leading the Pirates’ defense. Additionally, both teams entered the matchup with strong defensive units. USF ranked among the nation’s best scoring defenses, allowing just 14.5 points per game. Nevertheless, the Pirates found enough offense to secure an important home victory.
Kromenhoek Gives USF an Early Spark
Quarterback Luke Kromenhoek entered the game facing an important opportunity. Starter Michael Van Buren Jr. suffered an injury against UAB the previous week. Kromenhoek had already demonstrated his mobility against the Blazers, rushing for 92 yards. However, Friday’s matchup presented another challenge against a physical East Carolina defense. The young quarterback quickly helped the Bulls establish momentum during their opening possession. USF marched 80 yards in six plays, showcasing an efficient passing attack.
Kromenhoek connected with running back D’Andre Crowther for a 28-yard gain during the drive. Shortly afterward, he found wide receiver B. Rodgers for a 26-yard touchdown. Nico Gramatica converted the extra point, giving USF an early 7-0 advantage. The opening touchdown provided exactly the kind of start Hartline wanted. USF had struggled to produce first-quarter touchdowns throughout the season. Furthermore, Kromenhoek showed confidence while distributing the football. His early completions helped the Bulls move downfield against a talented defensive unit.
USF Defense Makes an Early Impact
East Carolina responded by moving the football against USF’s defense. Quarterback M. Griffis connected with receiver L. Sides as the Pirates advanced into Bulls territory. However, defensive back A. Fortenberry delivered an important takeaway. Fortenberry forced a fumble from Sides and recovered the football at USF’s 24-yard line. The turnover prevented East Carolina from capitalizing on a promising possession. Additionally, it continued USF’s recent success at forcing opposing offenses into mistakes.
The Bulls entered Friday after producing two defensive touchdowns against UAB. Defensive standouts C.J. Hicks and Grayson Howard had played major roles in that victory. Their continued importance reflected USF’s defensive identity under Aldridge. The Bulls needed their defense to provide opportunities while their offense searched for consistency. Meanwhile, East Carolina demonstrated why its defense deserved respect. The Pirates prevented USF from building a commanding early lead despite the Bulls’ opening touchdown.

East Carolina Battles Back
The Pirates refused to let USF control the contest. East Carolina gradually found opportunities through its rushing attack and short passing game. Running back A. Gray helped establish momentum with several productive carries. Meanwhile, the Pirates continued challenging USF’s defense with sustained possessions. Kicker N. Perez connected on a 44-yard field goal during the second quarter. The successful attempt reduced USF’s advantage to 7-3.
However, the Bulls responded with another scoring opportunity before halftime. Kromenhoek helped guide a 12-play, 53-yard possession that ended with a field goal. East Carolina answered with a late touchdown drive, keeping the pressure on South Florida. The Pirates’ offensive persistence became an important factor throughout the evening. Their ability to move the chains prevented USF from completely controlling the game’s tempo. Additionally, both defenses forced their opponents to work for scoring opportunities. Neither offense consistently dominated the line of scrimmage.
Bulls Cannot Finish the Job
The second half presented another opportunity for USF to seize control. However, East Carolina continued fighting and eventually secured the three-point victory. The final score reflected a difficult night for the Bulls. USF produced enough offense to remain competitive but couldn’t finish with another conference victory. Kromenhoek’s early touchdown pass highlighted his ability to generate explosive plays. Crowther also contributed through the running and passing games.
Meanwhile, the Pirates benefited from their balanced offensive approach. Their defense also helped prevent USF from creating enough separation. The outcome illustrated how narrow the margin can become during conference play. A single possession can determine whether a team celebrates or leaves disappointed.
Conference Championship Hopes Take a Hit
The defeat dropped USF to 6-3 overall and 2-3 in American Conference competition. Meanwhile, East Carolina improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The loss created another obstacle for Hartline’s program. USF entered November hoping to climb back into the conference championship conversation. However, three conference losses leave the Bulls needing significant help from other teams. Their remaining schedule also presents several difficult challenges.
USF returns home Thursday, November 12, to face Memphis at Raymond James Stadium. That matchup offers another opportunity to respond against a conference contender. Afterward, the Bulls travel to Florida Atlantic before finishing the regular season against Tulane. Hartline must continue addressing the offensive inconsistencies that have troubled his team. Furthermore, protecting the quarterback remains essential for generating sustained drives.
The defense has demonstrated its ability to keep USF competitive. However, the Bulls need more consistent offensive production to finish November successfully. Friday’s defeat represents a missed opportunity for South Florida. The Bulls started quickly but ultimately watched East Carolina celebrate an important conference victory. Now, USF must regroup before facing Memphis. The Bulls still have meaningful football ahead, but their margin for error has disappeared.
