New York Penn League Notes
The month of August is here, there are just five weeks left in the year. There are two weeks until the league plays its all-star game. Here is a look at what is going on in the league.
The Vermont Lake Monster’s are having a very good season to date. Leading the Stedler by a couple of games over their nearest challenger the Connecticut Tigers. Some of the reason for this include the offensive side where Ryan Gridley’s .299 batting average has him 8th in the race. His four home runs have him in the top ten in that category. His 15 RBI has him ranked fifth in that race. He is getting some help at the plate from Payton Squier who is tied for the lead in sac flies with three.
On the pitching side, Ivan Andueza has been getting the job done on the hill for the Lake Monsters. He is second in the league in wins with five and is tied for the lead in complete games with one. Vermont has been playing well since the season began and these are a couple of reasons why.
Mahoning Valley sits atop of the wild card standings. Relief pitching has been a key to where they sit. Jonathan Tearney is third in lowest batting average against at .135 (7 for 52), he is second in highest strikeouts per 9 IP ratio with a 14.06 ratio (25 K’s in 16.0 IP).
Aberdeen pitcher Jon Keller is also doing well on the bump. He leads the league in lowest batting average against at .096 (5 for 52), also leads in fewest baserunners per 9 IP ratio at 4.96 (9 in 16.1 IP).
Toro-Hernandez Abraham, of Tri- City, has made himself a force with the bat in his hands. He is fourth in slugging percentage at .529, tied for second in home runs with six, third in extra bases hit with 13 and fourth in base on balls with 19. His 1/17.33 places him third in best HR/AB ratio.
