HARRISONBURG, Va. — In another significant move across the college athletics landscape, James Madison University announced that its Board of Visitors voted unanimously to accept an invitation to join the American Athletic Conference. The Dukes will depart the Sun Belt Conference and officially transition as a full member of the American no later than July 1, 2028.
The move marks another major step forward for a JMU athletic department that has achieved rapid national prominence since elevating its programs from Division I FCS to the FBS level.
Scope and Transition Timeline
Under the terms of the transition, 17 of James Madison’s 18 varsity sports will compete under the American Athletic Conference banner. The lone exception is field hockey, which will remain in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) because the AAC does not sponsor the sport.
The move is familiar ground for JMU’s women’s lacrosse program, which already competes as an affiliate member in the American Conference and captured back-to-back conference tournament championships in 2025 and 2026.
To execute the move, JMU will pay a required departure exit fee to the Sun Belt Conference along with an entrance fee to the American Conference. University officials noted that because both leagues operate within the same “Group of Six” financial spending tier, the transition fits within existing athletic budget models and will not require state commission review.

Academic and Institutional Rationale
While athletic elevated profile remains a primary driver, university leadership emphasized that the move aligns directly with JMU’s broader institutional goals under its Madison Promise strategic initiative:
- R1 Research Expansion: JMU is actively pushing to achieve R1 doctoral research status. The American Athletic Conference currently features 11 institutions with R1 research classifications, providing JMU with immediate peer alignment in academic prestige and research opportunities.
- Major Media Markets: Moving to The American expands JMU’s institutional exposure into several top media markets across the East Coast, South, and Midwest—districts containing significant alumni networks and student recruitment pipelines.
- Basketball Elevation: The conference move provides a substantial boost for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs, granting higher net-ranking opportunities, enhanced television exposure, and improved postseason seeding metrics.
A Rapid Rise Through Football’s Ranks
JMU’s move to the AAC caps a remarkable trajectory for the football program over the past decade:
- 2016–2021 (FCS Era): Dominated the Colonial Athletic Association (now CAA Football), claiming the 2016 FCS National Championship and making four national title game appearances.
- 2022–2025 (Sun Belt Transition): Transitioned to FBS in 2022, quickly asserting dominance in the Sun Belt East Division. The Dukes earned full FBS postseason eligibility in 2024 and built upon that with a College Football Playoff berth.
- 2028 and Beyond (American Conference): Joins a league with established national brand equity, setting up regular divisional matchups against programs like Memphis, South Florida, East Carolina, and Charlotte.
JMU football has sold out season tickets for four consecutive campaigns at Bridgeforth Stadium while sustaining high-level national results through multiple coaching changes.
What They Are Saying
In a letter to the university community, JMU President James Schmidt framed the conference switch as a natural evolution for the university:
“I am proud of every championship and every relationship built during our time in the Sun Belt Conference. That chapter made us stronger. This move is not a departure from who we are. It is a declaration of where we are going.”
With formal acceptance secured, JMU will spend the upcoming seasons fulfilling its remaining scheduling commitments in the Sun Belt Conference while preparing facility infrastructure and administrative operations for its official AAC debut by 2028.
