The USF Bulls have experienced a slew of emotions, including dealing with two hurricanes that destroyed many parts of the state of Florida. They traveled to Boca Raton. The place where they ended up winning 45-0 over the Syracuse Orangemen in the Boca Raton Bowl. Their opponent was the FAU Owls. The same Owls that embarrassed them at Raymond James Stadium. Earlier this year, they got into a social media battle with USF Bulls as a team. In a way, these two teams do not like each other. Both teams haven’t had good starts to the season. USF came into the game with a record of 3-4. The Owls came in with a record of 2-5. Neither team has a great record within the conference the Bulls are 1-2 and Owls are 0-3. They are both looking up at the surprising Army Black Knights and Navy Midshipmen.
In a few words, this game was a tale of two halves. The first half was dominated by FAU. Their defense held the USF Bulls to just seven points. Quarterback Cam Fancher looked good throwing for one touchdown and leading the Owls to a 14-7 lead going into the half. We all know that football is not just one half. That means that both teams made adjustments. In some cases, the Bulls were looking for revenge not only from the social media battle from earlier in the year but from the game last year. USF was supposed to win last year and allowed FAU to dominate all three facets of the game. The Owls scored 56 points last year. It did not hurt the Bulls as they would go on to become bowl-eligible and win in Owls Stadium.
As the two teams came out for the second half the tide changed. The USF Bulls came out hungry and on their first possession, they scored a touchdown to tie the game after the defense forced the Owls to punt. That was short-lived as FAU scored and took the last lead they would have in the game. The rest of the game was a dominating performance in the second half. The Bulls only had one drive that did not result in points. This comes with backup quarterback Bryce Archie at the helm. Starting quarterback Bryum Brown is still being hampered by a leg injury he suffered in the Miami Hurricanes game. Archie finished the game 19-32, for 206 yards, and two touchdowns. The best part of USF’s offense was the running game.
USF used Nay’Quan Wright, Kelley Joiner, and Ta’Ron Keith. This is very hard for defenses to prepare for. Wright had 17 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Joiner had 11 carries for 89 yards and one touchdown. Keith had the biggest game on just three carries he had 81 yards and one touchdown. On top of those three scoring rushing touchdowns let’s add one for quarterback Bryce Archie. For all the Bulls fans, this is the time of game they thought the team would have many this year. It led to a 44-21 win for the Bulls and only allowed the Owls to score just seven points in the second half. The two coaches had a moment when the game was over. USF will now focus its attention on the Navy Midshipmen. The game will be at home for the Bulls and kicks off at high noon.
