You have a bye this weekend. There isn’t a Wake Forest football game to center your week and entire life around.
This means you have time on your schedule to do different things, maybe catch up on some yard or kitchen projects or watch some Netflix. Or take a jog. Maybe do some Hula Hoops; swing those hips.
Dedicated to your well-being, I’m here to offer ideas that are pretty much guaranteed to fulfill you on this idle week of no Wake Forest football.
Consider these bye week best practices.
One: Sprawl on your couch as if no one will stop in and see you. Go to YouTube on your phone. Type “American Pie.” Rest your phone on your sternum. Then sing along to singing bye-bye Miss American Pie because it’s your bye week. You’ll get your football fix when the song pivots to a marching band on the football field.
Two: Read the Sammy Sportface Baby Boomer Brotherhood Blog. There are ~189 so archived blogs about Wake Forest football you can scroll through to get your Wake football vibe in this off week. Some will be euphoric; others despondent. Some enlightening; others downtrodden. Some clear; others obtuse. Some hyperbolic; others more hyperbolic. Some mature; others unhinged. Some self-absorbed; others un-self-aware. Some complimentary; others. Some tasteful; others ungrateful. Me meandering; some sauntering. Some stateman-like; some sophomoric; some original; others repetitive; some about football; others about Sportface.
But open your mind to the swerving journey. There will be references to DJ and TJ; those are my friends. Buried amid the deluge of sentences you’ll find a treasure chest of gems both shiny and blurry, uplifting and discombobulating.
Three: Go to YouTube and search for Dave Clawson press conferences. Binge on 27 of them. Listen to this giant of a human being speak. He’s articulate and thinks clearly. What he says isn’t coach-speak or some sort of spin. He’s earnest and honest. He tells you what he really thinks and treats people with respect. I guarantee if you listen to him speak at press conferences you will feel you learned something important. About NIL he gets particularly animated and opinionated – watch him light up about that. He’s a Folger’s Coffee blend of Roy Williams, Tony Robbins, and Billy Graham.
Four: Close your eyes and fantasize that you’re standing on the Wake Forest Quad in front of Wait Chapel. Get spiritual. Rub your stomach. Get visual. See the Quad trees littered with white toilet paper.
Think about what’s ahead for the Wake Forest football season. Picture them cooking Cal and Carolina, demolishing Duke, and mauling Miami. See that happening. If you can visualize this in your mind, it will happen in real life.
Then imagine you’re at the Wake Forest Bowl Game and you serendipitously run into Sammy Sportface.
You find out Sammy is a 1985 graduate of Wake Forest who wants to galvanize, inspire, and amuse the Baby Boomer Brotherhood. He’ll tell you about his admiration of Tate Carney because he gets at least three yards per carry no matter how much penetration the defensive line gets.
You’ll get Sportface’s autograph. He’ll gush about Carney. You’ll treasure the autograph, put it in your scrapbook, and show it off to your grandchildren.
Five: Take your tuxedo or wedding dress to the dry cleaners and get it cleaned so that it’s ready for the next time you need to wear it. Or just drive by the dry cleaners on your way to get fast food. Poor preparation produces poor performance.
Six: Read the Blue Ocean Strategy. It’s a business book that inspires you to swim out into the blue ocean where there are no competitors and your life is totally unique because you provide something no one else does, or can, or ever will be able to. The Wake Forest delayed run-pass option is a blue ocean strategy. It’s hard to copy, easy to understand (well somewhat easy), and sustainable over the long term as long as you’re not going up against Clemson.
Seven: Stroll over to Reynolda Gardens and look at leaves turning orange and yellow. Stare at nature. Remember that poets wrote about nature all the time. Appreciate the wonder of being outside. Whiff the air. Saunter over to the Village Tavern and ordered a hamburger and root beer. Feel the relaxing vibes. No Wake Forest football game to get you all tense. A day of solemnity. The beauty of the bye week.
Eight: Drive to the Wake Forest football stadium. Stand in that walkway where the players stroll through two hours before home games. Think about watching them do this ritual before the Cal game the week after the bye. Listen to the Wake band play. Feel the drumming stimulate your stomach. See the cheerleaders out there on the grass waving their pom poms.
See yourself going inside the stadium an hour before kickoff to be dazzled by the navy blue and gold Cal football helmets with Cal in a stylish script. Admire the helmets. They are artistic wonders. I want to meet the person who designed that helmet and say how much I admire their work.
Tell yourself that, yes, the helmets are gorgeous but what’s going to be more gorgeous is the feeling after Wake wins the game and rises to 5 and 4 headed over to Chapel Hill the following week.
See Wake winning that game near Franklin Street. Then demolishing Duke and mauling Miami.
Nine: Visualize watching College GameDay as the broadcasters talk about Wake being one of the hottest college football teams in the United States. Watch Reece Davis interview Sammy Sportface about the Wake hot streak. Watch Sportface bloviate. Brag you got Sportface’s autograph.
Ten: Read all the blogs Sportface writes about Wake football between now and the Cal game. Ask yourself why so many. There are no answers. Be at peace with it. It’s a man feeling good churning towards 10,000 hours of writing.
Wanting to get from good to great – like Wake’s football team.
Then say goodbye to your bye week.
And hello to a winning streak for the rest of the season.
