You’ve got to start with “Just Like Heaven” by the Cure because watching Wake play football on a sunny breezy day in Winston-Salem – with a slight sunburn on your face – is just like Heaven. Rename the town, Winston Heaven.
There are some songs you listen to and you wonder where the band went mentally, psychologically, and creatively to produce this sound and melody that touches everyone who hears it in a nice way right in the middle of their hearts and you know this will be true 500 years from now.
The second tune you’ve got to listen to is “Under Pressure” by Queen because it’s got such a boppy catchy beat and it’s thematically on point with the Wake team. They’re under pressure to resurrect themselves from the four and eight eggplants of last year.
Gotta also play go with a little “Simple Man” sung by Shinedown’s maroon-haired lead singer because it’s about getting back in a mindset of what really matters, shedding all the superficialities of life and focusing on being a simple man (or woman) just focused on watching Wake’s football team wear the black and gold and the smoke and motorcycle and all the glitz. It will be so simple this Fall, man.
The fourth tune you should listen to is “Growing Up” by Boss Springsteen because it’s his most underrated hit that might be his second-best all-time after “Thunder Road.”
Wake’s football team will be showing us about growing up from last season and showing us what it means to mature, improve, and win more games including the one over there in Chapel Hill.
“American Pie” is also a must-listen-to because the song is about everything – life, death, football, newspapers, the Holy Ghost, war, a verdict, the band that wouldn’t play – and Wake football is about everything – life, losing, winning, parties, Bojangles, sadness, values, patriotism, loyalty, frustration, struggles, bands, and bloggers.
The last tune to pipe into your ears should be “Let’s Get Physical” by Olivia Newton-John. Winning football is about physical football, contact, impact, collisions, using your body to overpower your opponent, and looking really attractive doing it.
Tell you what, man, I wanna see the Deacs get all kinds of physical this Fall. I wanna play that tune every week of the season then after we win the national title we’ll all blare together Queen’s “We Are the Champions.”
You, me, and DJ.
