It’s got to be going pretty well these days for Armand Mondo Duplantis if you consider he broke the world record in the pole vault yesterday while cruising to his second consecutive Olympic Gold Medal.
He cleared six meters (19 feet inches) to clinch the Gold medal at these Paris Olympics – and it wasn’t close. He also won Gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 which means he became only the second man ever to win back-to-back pole vault Gold joining American Bob Richards achieved in 1952 and 1956.
Winning Gold was a given for this guy. In his last 31 pole vault competitions he’s won 30 and if you look through his path to ultra-greatness it’s filled with dominance in this sport that he got into at the age of four in his backyard.
The other inevitability was that he would do something amazing again as always does, which he did, breaking his own world record and flying cleanly over the bar set at 6.25 meters (20 feet six inches).
This dude is always alone at the top.
“From the beginning, when I started pole vaulting, I was never really competing against anybody other than myself,” he said in an interview with World Athletics. “I set goals based on what I think I am capable of.
He has already been named the World Athlete of the Year given to the world’s best track and field athlete. One of countless awards and titles to his name.
Glorious, all that, then when you layer in the smooch he had with his Swedish girlfriend afterward, Desire Inglander, this guy has vaulted himself to all kinds of heights over the bar and in romance.
A Swede sensation is Desire. Envision Olivia Newton-John in “Grease” or thereabouts.
“I’m grateful for what I’ve done, and it has been a really great few years for me, but I still feel that hunger and I still feel like there is more to do. I still feel like I can jump higher.”
Yo Mondo, you don’t need to jump any higher. You’re already as high as anyone can go.
