The 88th Masters started with a rain delay but that did not stop the first round from being exciting. With the rain, the first round concluded on Friday. The rest of the week’s weather was great. We were hoping to see Tiger Woods make the cut which would break a record. Also, would this be the week that Rory McIlroy could win his first green jacket? Would this be another year where a LIV tour player to go back-to-back in Masters wins? Well after the first round, Bryson DeChambeau stood atop the leaderboard. Woods finished at one over par and started his first round off with a birdie. Scottie Scheffler sat only one shot back, so the wait was on to see who would make the cut.
Tiger Woods made Masters history when he cut 24 consecutive Masters tournaments. This would set up the weekend. The first round ending on Friday morning may have hurt Woods’s chances to win. This golf course is set up very hard for the players to walk. With Wood’s knee and leg injuries, it was rarely impossible. They say that cream rises to the top but Bryson DeChambeau faltered a little bit. Scottie Scheffler and Colin Morikawa had the lead. A young Swedish player named Ludvig Aberg shined at the Masters and we may see him in the final three majors. The PGA, even though there will be a merger with LIV, was happy to see the LIV players fall back.
Jon Rahm won it a year ago and at the time, he was a member of the PGA Tour before taking close to a billion dollars to join LIV. The three holes that always seem to make or break a round at Augusta National is Amen Corner. Holes 11-13 have caused players that have the lead to lose it or give them some momentum. For Colin Morikawa, it happened in the final round. He was tied and playing with Scheffler, and the final round went the complete opposite. Scheffler hit great shot after great shot in his final round. He was going for his second green jacket in three years. Scheffler won his first in 2022. He is the number one player in the golf world.
His final round was one that which he never seemed stressed. He never shows much emotion on or off the golf course. He and his wife are excepting their first child. His wife told him that if she went into labor he would have to leave immediately to fly back to Texas. When he finally won his second Masters he went to receive his second green jacket. Scheffler said he might cry but never showed emotions. Maybe he cried after the cameras were off. Many compare him to Tiger Woods in his current dominance. Scheffler has only shot one round in the 70’s in the last 35. He also won the Players Championship a few weeks ago. As of right now, he may be unbeatable.
