Many golf fans want their respective countrymen to win one or most of the four majors. All four majors in 2024 are now over. The last one since the schedule change was the Open Championship, the third major at one time. The three that are on US soil are now played first before the Open Championship. The Masters, the PGA Championship, and the US Open are the first three majors of the year. This is the first time since 1982 that all four majors were won by American players. American-born players have won the last seven majors in a row. Later this week the Olympics start, and golf is one of the events and it will be another chance for players around the world to try and win a gold medal.
In 1982, the four majors were won by the following players Craig Stadler, Raymond Floyd, and Tom Watson. Watson won both the US Open and Open Championship. Stadler took the green jacket and Floyd won the PGA Championship. It was very similar this year. Scottie Scheffler won the Masters. Bryson Dechambeau won the US Open. Xander Schauffele won the PGA and Open Championships. He also will be going back to try and defend his gold medal at the Olympics. For the first time in 46 years, American players have won seven in a row. Back from 1975-78, they won 15 in a row. Up till this point, nine out of the last 10 and 23 of the last 31 have been American-born players.
Scauffele became the seventh player for the US to win at Royal Troon. The last eight times the Open Championship has been played there an American player has won dating back to 1962. Many will say that Tiger Woods during his dominance in the world of men’s golf was won mostly by him. He won three majors and had it not been for Vijay Singh, who is from Fiji winning the Masters in 2000, all the other three majors would have been won by Woods. Many will say why is this a big deal? Because the game is played worldwide. The only foreign players that have won at Royal Troon were Arthur Havers from England, Bobby Locke from South Africa, and Henrik Stenson from Sweden.
The four golf majors this year were all exciting. The merger between the PGA and LIV Tours is still ongoing. Golf is being talked about which is great for all the fans and future fans. It was also cool to see a single player win multiple majors that are not named Tiger Woods. The game will now be watched in the Olympics. Many do not think that golf should be in the Olympics. I know that many will watch along with all the other summer events. As Americans, we will all be cheering for Team USA to win as many medals as they can. As far as golf, let’s see if the US can sweep the majors next year as well.
