USF Baseball: A Shutout Win Over Marist

What a gorgeous day for both baseball and softball, a windy day in the low 70s and the USF Bulls were playing the Marist Red Fox. The crowd was very modest but mostly Bulls fans. The crowd was excited as the Bulls came out and dominated offensively and defensively. The Red Fox went down in just four hitters in the top of the first. What helped the hitters was that the wind was blowing out. Marist was in red tops and hats with white bottoms. The USF Bulls were in green tops and hats with pinstripe white bottoms. Many do not know but the baseball field has turf not clay whereas on the softball field, there is clay.

The Bulls’ defense was displayed in the top of the second when they had a pick-off play. USF took advantage of it when they had a two-run double by J. Mayo to give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead. Marist did not do much after that run was scored. The Bulls loaded the bases in the second inning but could not score a run. Dominik Madonna was dealing even though he was removed as the fifth inning started. Madonna had four strikeouts, and three walks and only allowed three hits. On the other hand, Riley Orr, for Marist, struggled he had five hits and allowed five runs with three of those earned. Most of the runs came off of the four walks he also gave up.

The Bulls led after one inning 2-0 and never looked back. USF would add three more runs in the third. One exciting play came in the bottom of the eighth as Drew Butcher hit a solo home run. That home run increased the Bulls lead to 8-0 which meant the game could be called if the Bulls scored two more runs. Well just an inning later that is what happened at the Bulls added to more in the bottom of the seventh to seal the game 10-0. This was exciting as in college baseball there is a 10-run rule. As the 10th run was scored the umpires called the game.

I was able to cover the full USF Bulls baseball game. It was a good sight to see the Bulls combine for a shutout. Logan Bevis came in and in the last few innings did not allow much. Pitching is what won the game for the Bulls and lost it for the Red Fox. What else killed Marist is the three fielding errors that came by missed catches.

The fans were excited and cheering in the stands. The Bulls celebrated but the day was not over because they had a doubleheader. They got new arms ready as they prepared for another game versus Marist. Before I left I walked over and watched the conclusion of the softball game the Bulls won 4-0. What a day for the USF Bulls baseball and softball with both getting shutouts.
